Women in Media International Conferences 2020

Women in media and communication discipline, including related fields have another very interest year loaded with Women-focused and other gender-based conferences to share research experiences on women, the media and society. This is another robust year for researchers and scholars in Journalism and Mass Communication disciplines interested in women-focused conference themes. Of course, men are free to attend such conferences but women show more interest in matters that affect them, especially when it has to do with the media and society.

1). CFP: African Women in Media 2020 Summit (AWiM2020), 29-31 July, 2020, Johannesburg, South Africa

African Women in Media (AWiM) fourth annual conference, aims to bring together media practitioners, researchers, policy makers and CSOs. Theme of this year’s conference is Reimagining Futures: Women in Media, Peace and Technologies. The Summit takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa on 29-31 July 2020. According to the conference website, ‘Re-imagining Futures’ reflects innovation in media industries, and the growing drive to change the narrative of Africa globally, particularly as African countries work towards achieving a dominant global position, and urgent objectives like Silencing the Guns by 2020, Free movement of people, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Issues around movement, immigration, peace and security, and the lived experiences, roles and insights of women in media practitioners, policy makers, CSOs and researchers make the AWiM2020 Summit a timely focal point to bring these stakeholders together.

2). The 6th World Conference on Women’s Studies, 2020, 28th to 30th May 2020, Venue, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Communication scholars do not only attend media-based conferences. General or issue-based conferences also provide platform for scholarly engagements involving media and communication researchers. Women’s studies conference is also open to scholars in communication and media related disciplines. It is an opportunity to showcase how the media can play crucial roles in projecting a better society for women.

The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM) presents the 6th World Conference on Women’s Studies 2020 (WCWS 2020)  to be held from the 28th – 30th May 2020 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The theme of the WCWS 2020 is: “Overcoming Women’s Subordination: Socialization, Law, and Structural Inequalities”. 3). Alliance of Women in Media Arts and Sciences Conference, 5th to 7th February, 2020, Venue, University of California, Santa Barbara

Theme of the conference which is: “Integration: Applying Art and Science” is based on research and artistic works by women through transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary connections between the technical sciences and other applied sciences that influence new media art. The main goal of this conference is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences emerging from the intersection of science and applied art. 7). Women in Communication: Pathways to Success, April 02, North Miami Beach, United States.

This conference is organized by the Lilian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication. It is a national one-day conference on April 2, 2020, which will bring together outstanding women professionals from around the country and beyond to discuss and analyze a broad range of topics focused on the theme of “Pathways to Success” – How can women navigate different pathways to success? In this fifth annual national conference, “Women in Communication: Pathways to Success,” thought leaders in the communications industries from around the country will spend the day discussing the status and role of women in communication and the challenges they are facing, including if they have made any progress in such areas as salaries, leadership positions and other facets of moving ahead. 8). Doing Women’s Film and Television History Conference, 20-22 May, 2020, Maynooth University, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland

The fifth biennial Doing Women’s Film & Television History conference invites proposals from researchers and practitioners engaged in the exploration, uncovering, archiving and dissemination of women’s roles in film and television, as well as wider media, both in the past and today.

The theme of this conference – ‘Forming Histories/Histories in Formation’ – aims to foreground issues pertaining to the production, curation and archiving of women’s histories in film and television as well as the methods for, and approaches to, producing and shaping these histories as they form. More particularly, much can be learned from the diversity of practices, experiences and narratives of women’s film and television history as they pertain to:  national, transnational, world and global histories; neglected, peripheral or hidden histories; organisations such as museums, archives and universities; collectives, groups and movements such as #MeToo; local communities and community media; emergent forms and platforms; and historical approaches to women’s reception of film and television as well as historicising current practices and experiences of reception, fandom and consumption.

This three-day conference casts the net wide so that it can capture a range of experiences, practices, industries, nationalities and voices that are situated in relation to women and their histories. The conference provides a platform for those working in and researching film, television and media more generally as well as those invested in the production of these histories and narratives of the past and as they materialise.
