Twenty-six-year-old Angela Ponce has made history as the first transgender person to win Spain’s Miss Universe beauty pageant.
The beauty queen surpassed 22 other contestants, becoming the first transgender person to win Miss Universe Spain.
Ponce will represent her country in the Miss Universe beauty pageant later this year. According to media reports, she will become the first woman, born male, to compete six years after the transgender ban was lifted.
This was not Ponce’s first shot at the crown. The beauty queen who is originally from Seville, had already taken part in the country’s Miss World Spain beauty pageant in 2015, but could not to secure the winner’s crown.
After being crowned Miss Universe Spain, she thanked those who supported her and expressed her commitment to promoting equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
Ponce was a man until surgery in 2014 after which she contested the Miss World Spain in 2015 but lost narrowly to eventually winner, Mireia Lalaguna.
She has made history as the first transgender to win the coveted Miss Universe Spain crown.
