The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has suspended the Vice Chancellor of Bingham University owned by the church, Professor Samuel Leonard-Fwar.
Visitor of the university owned by the ECWA, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Gad, while announcing this on Tuesday in a press conference in his office at the ECWA headquarters Jos, disclosed that the decision to suspend the VC was part of the recommendations of the visitation panel sent to the university recently.
He said the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Alexander Adelaiye will act as the Vice Chancellor for the period of three months that the suspension last.
The visitor also ordered some academic and non-academic staff recently relief of their duties to resume work immediately.
“We are glad to report that the panel which is made up of very seasoned university administrators have swing into action and submitted an interim report with key recommendations for immediate implementation.
“The relevant governance bodies of the university have accepted the recommendations of the visitation panel’s interim report and have commenced efforts to reduce the arrears of staff salaries and allowances and work towards normalizing payment of salaries, and provide the necessary funds to facilitate a successful accreditation exercise.
“In addition, certain academic and non-academic staff whose appointments were terminated without recourse to due process have been recalled and due process would be followed in determining their alleged cases where applicable.
“The governing council has also approved that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Kursim Leonard-Fwa would proceed on leave for the duration of the panel’s work but will remain within reach to interact with the panel. The deputy vice Chancellor, Professor Adelaiye will act in his absence”
Gado further stated: “However, our desire is not just to intervene intermittently when there are challenges but to have a university that all the governance structures work seamlessly for smooth academic activities.
“In line with the report, we have taken further steps to overhaul the university management and resolved to inject some substantial funds to address pressing problems in the university in other to inspire confidence in the stakeholders.
“It is important to state that what is happening in the university is not as precarious as being peddled in some quarters, situations like this sometimes occurs to provide a good learning curve for progress and development.
“We have learnt lessons in the process and we are now ready to make progress in the university.
“We are glad that in spite of the situation, academic activities have been going on well without any interruption and all the academic program been run in the university have their required accreditation that makes every degree or certificate earned from the university very genuine and recognized globally.
“As a university, we remain committed to the pursuit of our vision to produce young generation of leaders with sound moral and spiritual values for Nigeria and Africa.
“ECWA has established Bingham university as a step of faith by a conscious choice to address societal needs for excellence. We have achieved progress and a significant level of academic excellence because of the society choice made at critical point.”
