What Is Film Criticism?

Film criticism is the evaluation of a film using different elements of film-making. It is the analysis of a movie using such elements a plot, setting, soundtrack, cinematography, mood, costumes, makeup, editing, characterization, among others. The critique does a critical examination of a film after watching it with a view to revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the production. The critique looks at the quality of the film, whether it meets expectations, what its rating is in the genre it exists, and how it compares to other films.

The film critique usually provides a summary of the plot of the film to either refresh the storyline to the reader, or reinforce an idea of repetition in the film’s genre. The critique begins with an introduction where basic information about the film is provided. He or she then summarizes the plot, provides a thesis statement, and gives readers a clue on what the critique is going to be about. This is a tasking job that requires watching the film thorough to see details ‘in-between the lines’.
