VC Calls for Inclusion of Private Varsities in TETFUND

Private Universities exist in Nigeria and pay the same tax as public Universities. As such, private Universities should also benefit from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), a scheme set up by the Federal government for development of public universities. This is the position of the Vice Chancellor of Renaissance University, Professor Charles Onochie. Renaissance University is a private University located in Ugbawka, Enugu state.

This argument has been raging and Prof. Onochie added his voice to the issue during the maiden edition of the institution’s convocation ceremonies last weekend. He argued that private and public universities are partners in progress, and both produce graduates that feed the nation’s labour market. He also said this was one of the reasons for higher fees paid in private universities.

Let’s see what government feels about this position.

Private universities, as we all know pay substantial amount of money as school fees and part of the money are being allocated to the government. So i see no reason why they shouldn’t benefit from the tertiary education trust fund (TETFUND ). 2ndly is that, since the universities (Private) have been approved and accredited by the government itself, they should equally include them in any of their budgets, by so doing, there will be no discrimination of any sort. This is my candid opinion.
