Unilag FM, Nigeria’s First Campus Radio Station

UNILAG 103.1 FM is the trail blazer in the campus radio landscape in Nigeria. It is owned by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). It was the first campus radio station to receive license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in 2003.

In fact, the history of Campus broadcasting in Nigeria began with the story of Unilag’s attempt to get a campus radio license in 1982. The story began when an erudite Professor of Mass Communication, Ralph A. Akinfeleye called for the establishment of an educational radio station for the University of Lagos. The then Head of Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos, Professor Alfred Opubor (R.I.P) took up the challenge and wrote to the Federal Ministry of Information and Communication for a Radio License.

That move did not succeed until the eventual Media Deregulation Policy of 1992. The License was eventually granted in February 2002, twenty years after the University applied for one. The frequency of 103.1 FM was assigned to the University in July 2003 and the station was officially commissioned on the 14th of December, 2004 by former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Unilag Radio then became the first Campus station to receive a license and go on air in 2004. It was based on Unilag Radio’s credible performance, the stage was set for other campus stations to receive their licenses.

Today, Unilag radio is waxing even strong, becoming very popular in a very competitive media landscape in Lagos state and succeeding as well.

Unilag fm is a radio station that caters to the University of Lagos community and other parts of Lagos. It is a radio station that provides instructional and educational programmes for tertiary level students and other adults seeking knowledge in order to improve themselves. It has some of the hottest On-Air Personalities (OAPs) in Lagos whose ptogramme presentation approaches keep listeners glued to their radio sets.
