Ugly Wednesday: NairaBet Agent Hangs Self for Inability to Pay Customer N600,000

Tragedy struck in Obadeyi Ajala area of Lagos yesterday when an unidentified NairaBet agent hanged himself for not being able to pay a customer who won N600,000 in his shop.

The deceased was seen dangling from a rope in an uncompleted shop at Ajala bus stop, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, according to Punch Metro. It was further reported that when the deceased’s girlfriend who was said to be a staff of a filling station in the area was told, she reportedly passed out on sighting the body of his boyfriend dangling from a rope. But she was immediately revived by the sympathisers at the scene.

An resident of the area who spoke to Punch Metro said the girlfriend of the deceased told them after she had regained consciousness, that the man sent her a text message on Tuesday(May 23), saying he wanted to commit suicide. She said she called his line, but he didn’t pick his calls. The girl friend further said the late man had a NairaBet shop and that one of the customers won N600,000, but he has not paid him.

Another eyewitness who said  policemen from the Ijaiye division came to remove the corpse, added: “I learnt he ran a NairaBet shop. If it is true that he was owing a customer N600,000, he must have received the money from the NairaBet management and used it for something else. I also play NairaBet and whenever I win, the agent I patronise pays me the moment the company credits his account. The company doesn’t owe the agents, but some of them play smart at times when customers win big money”.

Punch Metro spoke with an official of NairaBet Contact Centre, who gave her name only as Chidika, who said on the telephone that the firm always paid for any won ticket, adding that it was not aware of the incident.
