Tragedy struck Calabar, the Cross River state capital yesterday when 30 football fans were electrocuted after a high tension cable fell on the roof of the viewing centre where they were watching a live match. Channels Television reported that the victims were watching a UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht on satellite television.
Though Manchester United won the match 3-2 aggregate, with Marcus Rashford netting the winner in the 107th minute, the tragic event overshadowed the spirit of victory among football fans and the entire community in Calabar.
Eyewitness accounts have it that a high tension cable attached to a transformer near the viewing center cut snapped and fell on the zinc used to construct the roof of the viewing centre leading to the monumental tragedy.
