Tourism! The Illustrious Ukwulu People

Ukwulu is a town in Dunkofia Local government area in Anambra state, a 30minutes
walk from Igbariam junction. It comprises of 8 villages namely Amagu,
Umugama, Amaegbu, Adagbeh and Iruezeagu each have their own autonomous
kings.
The people of Ukwulu are mainly farmers. They specialize in the cultivation
of cassava used for the production of garri.  An elderly woman identified as
mama Ugo from Amagu village in ukwulu said “Our people are specialist in
cultivating cassava. We have good road and our people are Christians”
Their biggest market is Ukwulu is Afo market where people within and
outside the community come to buy and sell. They sell ground corn (Oka) used for
Pap/Akamu, Dried cassava (Akpu) for Garri.
A Man from Eziowerre but has been in ukwulu for 23years said “The ground
foodstuff that we sell helps to sustain our lives because it reduces risk
of illness. We sell the ‘Oka’ which is known as ‘mangu corn’ from Jos at
#1,000 per paint bucket, Akpu at #700 and Dawa at #1,200 respectively. He
also noted that the ‘fio fio’ which is high in protein though it takes time
to cook, it heals kwashiorkor, The water from it also gives energy. Also,
kampara a whitish brown groundnut which can b eaten or used for soup is
highly nutritious.
The popular festivals in Ukwulu are ‘onwa asato’ and ‘nnukwu onwa asato’ where the
bigger masquerades are seen. Their next ‘onwa asato’ would take place on
November.
The Igwe of Ukwulu is HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS Igwe Peter Anukwu Uyanwa. The people of ukwulu are mainly Catholic Christians as churches are seen scattered around community.
Ukwulu is endowed with good things and good people as the Vice chancellor
of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Fidelis Okafor is a well-known personality in Ukwulu.
