Igbariam is a place located in the region of Anambra state in Nigeria in Anambra East Local Government Area,which is 24 kilometer/15 miles away from its state capital Awka,
It is a populace of about 30,000 people with the latitude and longitude of 6°23’26.4”N(6.3906700°) width and 6°56’38.7”E(6.9440900°)
lenght. respectively. It is an Agricultural community which cultivates Rice,Maize,Assorted vegetables, Akidi and basically tomatoes,they also have fishermen, and sells them their neigbouring town the people of Otu Ocha,other neighbouring includes Achalla,Awkuzu,Nando and Anyamelum,havinvumamo river asubsection of Amambala river as their boundary.
The community is ruled by HRM Nkelu Nzeukwu Kelly (Ogbalagidi) who succeeded Late Igwe Michael Omeada,the community,which celebrates his Ofala (celebrating his reign as the king) on the 4th ofJanuary every year.originally settled at the present Chukwuemeka Odemegu Ojukwu University (COOU)as their Okpuno,after series of war with Ada people (i.e, warriors from Ahiafia Bende) invaded them,then they rushed offfor security reason and returned by 1898,and settled at ugwuani as their new habitat.Originally pegans, But now about 80% are now Christians,Mostly Anglicans and Catholics which are the St Simons Anglican Church and St Anthony Catholic church.
The major Deities in Igbariam are Amuziyi,Udede,Uzuzu which was named after a river Okputu stream provides them their drinking water ,The community has one government secondary school,2 private/mission schools,3 primary schools and 3 in the farm settlement namely community high school Igbariam,Bishop Patterson Memorial Secondary school,Father lutz Memorial secondary School,St Anthony’s Primary school(Amanasa),New era government school and Fratanital Primary school(private).
They celebrate festivals like the”Nkpu Arusi”,”Nta”, yam festival and sport festival using Masquerades. The community calendar has 13 month which makes up a year,the first month of the traditional year is called “Nnwa Nga”.They have 4 days in a week made up of Eke,Ore,Afor,Nkwo.Eke usually being their market day
“Ojala”who oversees the community as a whole, Mr Obuah Anthony the community chief, complains of bad roads, No power supply, poor technology advancment asks the government for assistance,another interview with Mr John Nwaokoye,Chairman of the Ojala Age grade requests for boundaries between them and their neigbouring towns.
