It was 2pm on a sunny Friday, when we set out on a tour to Achalla. Our journey was a clumsy one as our means of transportation was the back of a sachet water truck. We were least worried about that because either ways we would be arriving at our destination. After all, it is said that the end justifies the means.
Achalla is the capital of Awka North, a local government area in Anambra state, South-central Nigeria. She is siblings with Isanu who formerly lived in Achall-ibuzo in present delta state and later migrated to Arochukwu kingdom in Abia state before she finally settled in Anambra state. Te community comprises eight villages – Umudiani, Amukabia,
Odawa, Umuogbe, Umunagu, Umuezede, Udezim and Amadim.
She has many streams like Ezigbeokwu, iyiocha, Ali, If, Ogboli, Iyimu and Ovia.”OVIA” is a more dedicating stream in Achalla which is strictly for the females only where they go to fetch, bath, wash and perform their feminine rituals.
According to “NWAANYIUZOR ECHIDIMMA” the oldest trader in Orie market, she said “Achalla people are known for their trading, farming and hunting as well “. The orie market is the biggest and most crowded market out of the two markets in Achalla, which are the “ORIE and NKWO”. Orie market is said to have the largest population of buyers and sellers having people both from withith and outside Achalla community while Nkwo Achalla is their mini market.
Achalla has lots of infrastructures like the “MAGISTRATE COURT ACHALLA”,”MKPOMMKPOITE MATERNITY HOSPITAL”, “NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WATER RESOURSES”, “ST NICHOLAS ANGLICAN CHURCH”,”EGEDE PRIMARY SCHOOL” and lot more.
Achalla people are very Accommodating and they entertain their visitors with “ARIGBU and OJA”. They celebrate their “IWAJI and NZIDIANI”perennially in October when they mark out time to thank their gods (IKENE CHI HA MAKA EZUMIKE ORU).
