Top 20 Campus Radio Stations in Nigeria

 

Campus radio is an important educational and social facility for campuses around the world. It prepares students with real-life experience. Most of these stations feature news shows, sports programmes, and public affairs broadcasts, which prepare students for careers in journalism, television, and more. Campus radio station undoubtedly allows students to receive important media experience they may not be able to find anywhere else on campus. Whether it is through research, working with others, or preparing their own material, there is transferable experience in much of what a student disc jockey or student reporter does at his or her college radio station. A student could turn out to be a fantastic On-Air Personality (OAP) at while in the higher institution by doing well in the campus radio station.

In most higher institutions both students in Mass Communication and other departments participate in the running of campus radio stations. Most higher institutions in Nigeria have radio stations which air very interesting programmes enjoyed by listeners within and outside the university community. Here is a list of top 20 campus radio stations in Nigeria.

 

1. UNILAG 103.1 FM

UNILAG 103.1 FM is the trail blazer in the campus radio landscape in Nigeria. It is owned by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). It was the first campus radio station to receive license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in 2003.

In fact, the history of Campus broadcasting in Nigeria began with the story of Unilag’s attempt to get a campus radio license in 1982. That move did not succeed until the eventual Media Deregulation Policy of 1992. The License was eventually granted in February 2002, twenty years after the University applied for one. The frequency of 103.1 FM was assigned to the University in July 2003 and the station was officially commissioned on the 14th of December, 2004 by former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Unilag Radio then became the first Campus station to receive a license and go on air in 2004. It was based on Unilag Radio’s credible performance, the stage was set for other campus stations to receive their licenses. Today, Unilag radio is waxing even strong, becoming very popular in a very competitive media landscape in Lagos state and succeeding as well.

2. UNIZIK FM 94.1

UNIZIK FM 94.1 campus radio was licensed by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on the 8th February, 2007, but started test transmission on 27th April, 2008. It is owned by Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka but housed in the Department of Mass Communication with the workforce drawn from all sectors of the University Community. UNIZIK FM is a nonprofit organization. It is principally licensed to train students in broadcasting and other related fields like engineering, information technology , creative arts, Use of English, drama and to provide opportunities for practical experience as well as to promote the social well-being of the campus community. The station runs from 5.30am to 9.00pm daily on weekdays and 10.00pm on weekends, excluding Sunday.

3. Madonna 93.3 FM, Okija

Madonna 93.3 FM is owned by Madonna University, is the first private University in Nigeria and also the first Catholic University in the country. It is one of the leading campus radio stations in Southeast Nigeria and one of the most sought-after radio stations in Anambra state. It has listeners cut across every sector of the state. The station has very interesting programmes which keep listeners glued to their radio sets.

4. LASU Radio 95.7 (Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos

LASU 95.7 FM is the campus radio station of Lagos State University (LASU). The station came into existence in 2015 after it was commissioned by the then Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola. Its slogan is Lively and Solidly Unique. The staff strength is made up of Mass communication students and volunteers from other departments in the university.

5. SEARCH 92.3 FM

Search FM is owned by Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna). It commenced full operation on the 4th of March 2009 after Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua approved and issued a broadcast license to the institution to commence campus radio following the recommendation of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The station is very popular in Niger state for its informative, entertainment and educative programmes, including content meant to capture the attention of the student population and host community of the University. Search FM has some of the most exciting programmes and On-Air Personalities in Niger state, making it a station to reckon with in the state.

6. Moment 98.7 FM, Oko

Moment 98.7 FM is owned by Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State. It is primarily run by the department of Mass Communication with workforce than spans across students in various departments of the institution. The radio station was established in 2013 and has since grown to an enviable height in the media landscape of Anambra state. It is one of the very few campus radio stations Southeast Nigeria with the most exciting on-air personalities that know how to keep the audience glued to their radio sets while listening to programmes.

7. Hebron 95.9 FM (Covenant University Radio Station, Ota) ), Ogun State

Hebron 95.9 FM is a student trainee campus/community radio station, established by Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State. Its primary aim is to reach its immediate community with programemes that will enhance positive development through educational and instructional programmes. The station does not only reach its immediate environment.

8. Diamond 101.1 FM, Ibadan

Diamond FM is the campus radio station of the University of Ibadan (UI). The Station was officially opened on 30 October 2008.  It has an impressive audience base with listeners spread across Ibadan and nearby towns. The slogan of the station is “Promoting Values and Excellence”. It is located in the Media Centre of the University of Ibadan. The station was named Diamond FM to mark the 60th Anniversary of the University. Diamond FM is designed to be students friendly, volunteers-driven, inclusive and interactive. It provides opportunities for members of the university community to share knowledge, ideas and expertise relating to the University of Ibadan.

9. Hillside 94.1 FM (Auchi Polytechnic Radio), Auchi

Hillside 94.1 FM is the campus radio station of Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State. The radio station was established in 2007. The station was established to serve the needs of the polytechnic community and its host communities. However, the station has an impressive reach and audience base, with listeners in Benin, Asaba, Akoko, Ekpeshi, Igarra, Okpella, and Okene, including some parts of Kebbi state in Northern Nigeria. Hiilside FM is operated by both students and non-students who have the talent to showcase through campus radio broadcast.

10. Excel 103.7  FM (Rivers State University)

Excel 103.7 FM is owned by Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It is noted for having very exciting On-Air Personalities (OAPs) who know how to keep their audience captivated with unique presentation style.

11. ABU Samaru 101.1 FM (Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Kaduna)

ABU Samaru 101.1 FM is the official radio station of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Kaduna State, Nigeria. The ABU Samaru Studio was established by the British Broadcasting Corporation, World Service Trust (BBC WST), under its VOICES Project and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), hence it is referred to as ABU/BBC Studio.

12. UNIBEN FM 100.1 (University of Benin Radio), Benin City, Edo State

UNIBEN 100.1 FM is the campus radio station of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin city, Edo State. The station was established in 2014.It is a vibrant radio station that airs interesting news, entertainment, and sports shows.

13. Lion 91.1 FM, Nsukka, Enugu State

Lion 91.1 FM is the campus radio station of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The station was established to serve the needs of the university community and its environs. The quality staff strength is doing that job very well, with an expanding audience base. Lion FM is operated by both students and non-students who have the talent to showcase through campus radio broadcast.

14. Great 94.5 FM, Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU Ile-Ife), Osun State

Great 94.5 FM is the official campus radio station of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife. It is one of the hottest radio stations in Osun state with impressive On-Air Personalities (OAPs) and interesting programmes.

15. UNILORIN 89.3 FM

Unilorin FM 89.3 is the official campus radio station of the University of Ilorin. It is a broadcast Radio station from that provides top quality educative, informative and entertaining programmes. 16. IMSU Star 90.9 FM, Owerri.

19. BSU FM (Benue State University), Makurdi, Benue State

BSU 89.9 FM is the official campus radio station of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi. The station was commissioned during the administration of former Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Charity Angya, precisely in November 2015. It is domiciled at the Department of Mass Communication. The station is positioned to assist Mass Communication students to get first-hand experience in broadcasting and news reporting. IT has been doing very well in disseminating information to members of university community and audience members in the entire state and beyond.

20. ESUT Radio 106.5 FM,  Enugu State

ESUT Radio 106.5 FM is a campus radio broadcasting station that is located within the university community. The station is owned by Enugu State University. It began operation in 2014 and has since grown to become very popular among listeners within and outside the university community.
