Suicide Attempt: FUTO Student Jumps into Otammiri River

The last may not have been heard of the worrisome trend of suicide cases in Nigeria with another absurd incident taking place on Saturday. This time, a student of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) Owerri identified as Sydney Prince reportedly jumped into the Otammiri River in a bid to take his life.

Eyewitness accounts have it that Prince was seen by some girls doing their early morning jug while he was making several calls close to the River which was within the school environment.

Prince who is a student of Material and Metallurgical Engineering, is also the leader of one the security groups in the institution, Man O War. After making several calls, Prince reportedly threw away his handset and jumped into the Otammiri River in a bid to end his life. Shortly after jumping into the River, it apparently dawned on him that he was dying, since he could not swim and he started screaming for help. This was when the attention of the girls that were jugging was drawn to the scene and they started screaming for help too. Prince was said to have passed out in the River but was rescued by expert swimmers who dragged him to safety and resuscitated him.

But why would a young man want to end his life? Reports have it that Prince was depressed and dejected because he felt the management of the institution was being unfair to him by not allowing him to graduate though he had several carryover courses. He was also said to have complained that he was owed his allowances as a Man O War personnel for 12 months. Sources said Prince felt he had put in so much fighting bad guys in the University and should be treated better than what came his way. Punch reports that the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the institution, Chike Ezenwa has confirmed that Prince is a student of the University. But the PRO did not say anything further on the matter, according to reports.

This quickly reminds the public of the infamous case of the Medical Doctor who committed suicide by jumping into the Lagoon in Lagos from the Third Mainland Bridge. Does it mean that this “jumping into the River” approach to suicide is becoming fashionable? Again we ask: should Nigerians start getting worried about the emerging suicide stories in the country and how do we justify such acts?

  1. This is really sad. No matter any circumstances, suicide should not be considered.

  2. chikaogwu Chioma

nawa… why wanting to take his own life? hmmmm

  3. chisom Janefrances

I wil say that the young who try to commit suicide did it out of frustration.
firstly z d several carry over
secondly z d money he owned to the man war O.so he decided to end his life.but if I could say my mind i would say dat the young man never did all those things Internationally bt though to he never believe on himself as a man he is don’t suppose to end his life like that but have to face it with courage n determination. the world we are living on z all abt challenge. what u did today will determine what your next life wil be.(Hakuna matat )

  4. Why would one attempt suicide in this sweet world? Is he the only person who is frustrated?

  5. even though he is frustrated that doesn’t give him the right to end his life, because he is not the creator. he would have meet somebody that he can confide on for counseling.

  6. Frustration can lead people to anything..individual differences made it possible that all must not posses same characteristics, some can withstand challenges while some cannot, when one is in this state of confusion and frustration, his reasoning goes in a zig-zag direction,so the subject should not be blamed that much.If it was in the western world, certain circumstances would be considered and certain people tried for causing the victim the pains of making such move..In my own view the school management (especially the lecturer(s) and the Man O War) should be brought to book and the victim should also face charges for attempting to take his own life also go for rehabilitation because psychologically the boy is traumatized.#justtryingtomakecommonsense

    • What did the lecturers do wrong? why should they be brought to book?

      • Because most of them “MIGHT” intentionally want to frustrate him for personal reasons…Someone can’t have carryover once and decide to take his life,it must have gotten to a level where he felt he cannot control again..so judging from that point the circumstances surrounding his reasons should be investigated throughrouly.Though am still against his decision but all the same judgment is of the creator.

no matter the situation or condition..he has no supportive reason for him to take his life..even the bible abashed it..He should face the judgment..He is not the person having the worst problem on earth…I seek and pronounce judgment(how I wish I have the power to do so?)

  8. A man that have life have hope, so no matter the level of frustration, our mistakes had already been done. Therefore we should find a way to move on. One should not think of suicide let alone committing that…wisdom is profitable to direct.

  9. Obiechina Ifunanya Vivian

I think the subject is psychologically, physically and emotionally bothered. So the best remedy is counselling;he should be meant to understand that life is to be lived and followed gradually. You are not meant to be 100% comfortable, even the richest man on earth battles with his own problem which is unknown to us. *Difficulties and challenges are not meant to break us rather to strengthen and prepare us for better things ahead*

Whatever may be the situation, suicide should be the last thing to be considered cause it’s against God and humanity.

  11. It seems that in Nigeria, suicide is the next option for some inebriated youths. Testimony awaits his church and the devil carries the blame as usual .
Simply, the young man needs rehab and not blame game.

  12. Whistle blowers should also shift their interest to this and do the needful to ameliorate this menace

  13. Ijoba Ifeoma Mary

The rate of suicide attempt is getting out of hand, the government will have to look into it.Committing suicide is not the best option to a promising and energetic youth that has a bright future,we know that he is frustrated, the carryovers and the money,he just have to be brave and face the reality, the future is brighter for him to take his life like that, a life that is not his own moreover wherever he is going is not the best. Courage is what he really needs now. Thank God for the quick response and survival.

    • Does it mean you are supporting what the guy did by thanking God he survived? Was that what Obediah said you should say here?

      • Ijoba Ifeoma Mary

No sir, am not supporting what the young man did, but am thanking God becos his mission was not accomplished, and the merciful God gave him another chance to live and be a living testimony to upcoming youth that suicide is not the best way out of frustration.

  16. Its only in North Korea that one can see such a thing because of relationships or family issues, but come to think of it here in Nigeria,”Who get time for that kind thing” My brother life is too short to waste, I always believe that the future is brighter no matter any circumstances.. RIP but I’m wondering what you will tell your God.

  17. I was wondering what he will tell his God if eventually he passed away…

  18. trials they say is the ladder to someone’s promise land,so no matter the trial, suicide shouldn’t be an option.

  19. Casmir Obiakor ONWA

  20. nwangene. onyema

is act is pure foolishness, how would someone choose to take his life just because of something like this… Dis boy need medical attention.

  22. Serving two matters at a time, he should focus on his books and leave security work, but committing suicide is not the best

  23. Serving two masters at same time, my brother committing suicide is not the best

  24. Suicide is like stealing more so like sin. How? Because they are all in born within us all. Therefore, the willingness for you to display any of these is dependent on what you want and the stuff you are made off. When ever you feel you are pissed off get something to cool you off or better still talk to a Superior. I state that it is out of cowardness and lack of self esteem that can make a man take his own life. If you think you have failed in so many occasions, then take the likes of SIR MARTIN LUTHER & THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA TODAY who failed presidential elections several times. Perseverance is the KEY. I rest my finger.

  32. suicide is not a second option to d downfall of any human.there re cases worst than his, cases more frustrating than his but giving up is d last thing on dia mind.

  33. UMEAKU SOMTO ONYEDIKA

    SUICIDE????
    NO ONE HAS ANY RIGHT
LEGAL OR ILLEGAL TO COMMIT SUICIDE

  34. we all have our own problems, but the best solution is not by suicide because, as long as we live, there’s hope.. the downfall of a man is not the end of his life. he did wrong

  37. obido chiamaka genevieve

This is a very sad story. But even at that suicide is never a good decision to make, something our youth don’t think about the future before attending to their present situations n that’s very bad.
