Do you remember the story of the Vice Chancellors of two Federal Universities that were recently suspended for corruption? Well, instead of tears of sympathy we are hearing of ‘akara’ of celebration in Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
Reports have it that the institution has made history as the first university in the country where staff held a party to celebrate the exit of their vice chancellor. Prof. Olusola Oyewole was suspended last week as vice chancellor of the university over series of complaints that have to do with maladministration and financial malpractice. Instead of sympathizing with him, Daily Trust reported that members of the Non-Academic Staff Union and Association of students and Technologists occupied the open ground in the university, dressed gorgeously, where they threw a loud party. The Joint Action Congress (JAC) was also reported to have been part of the event. The workers said the suspension of the vice chancellor was a big relief to students and staff of the institution.
A major part of the celebration was frying of akara. In Yoruba culture this is done to celebrate the passage of the dead. The event is more serious than we think o.
