Shocker: 100 Level Unilag Student Commits Suicide by Drinking Sniper Insecticide after Publicly Being Shamed by Roommates

Ayobiri (Pix credit: naija)

This is another sad news from the growing list of suicide stories in Nigeria. A 100 level student of Employee Relations and Human Resource Management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Ayibiri Ayomide, has committed suicide by drinking sniper insecticide after her roommates had shamed her publicly for finding missing items in her bags.

The items which were said to have been missing in their room in Amina hostel, included make up and clothes. They were found scattered in three different bags belonging to Ayobiri. Her room mates were said to have disgraced her publicly after the discovery. Ayobiri’s mother who is a staff of Unilag came to the hostel the next day to settle the matter. According to reports, she paid N2000 said to be the value of the makeup and decided to take her daughter home. But as she left with her daughter, Ayobiri’s roommates called her disgraceful names, shaming her publicly. At home that day, Ayobiri took sniper insecticide after her mother had returned to work. Her mother returned and saw her in a terribly critical state. Ayobiri pointed to the sniper bottle she drank from and her mother gave her palm oil to no avail. Her mother took her to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Ayobiri died shortly after.

This is the most trending story in the social media at the moment. Sad news. It was alleged that Ayobiri apparently took sniper insecticide because she could not bear the shame. I bet the roommates and those who shamed her publicly never knew it would end this way. Tongues are still wagging as to the controversial nature of the incident and the need for authorities of Unilag and security agencies to look into the matter.

It is appauling and look stupid . she took her worthfull life just because she was publicly embarrassed.
Even if it is true she shouldn’t have thought of it talk more of doing it.

If I should say that is the highest level of hatred one should have for his/her self. she deserve no mercy for tampering with God created life.since her mother is a staff they should have resorted to investigating the issue immediately.
Now she is dead everybody might believed it is true because she is no longer there to speak up for herself.in conclusion the girl shouldn’t have killed her self. She allowed her self to be humiliated which is not supposed to be.Her death is a lesson to the peopl especially to the youth at large.
who might out of emotion tend to do negative things not only taking sniper or killing there selves. The school should ogarnis a yearly or semester seminar.with a good phycologists to address student, buld there ego on self worth and actualisation.

  3. Wow this is really serious o. People should mind the kind of things they say or do to others because you don’t really know how those words or actions can affect the person in question.

  4. Though sad,but suicide was never a better option.I wonder how people feel comfortable killing dem selves all for one problem dey find dem selves in,without thinking about what awaits dem wen d time(judgment) comes

This girl died of psychological trauma….she felt lesser than a human being and don’t know how to face her friends and hostel mates with such stigma but her decision of taking her life shouldn’t have been an option at all..on the mothers side, she is supposed to know the type of child she has and not to leave her all alone in such situation instead keep a close watch on her till all settles, her room mates should be punished and all those who mocked her that led to this.

  6. What a bleeding generation. It is horrifying, exasperating and quite unfortunate for a thinking being like her to commit suicide all in the name of public assault.
Drinking sniper is starting to be a culture in most Nigerian higher institutions, why I said this is because this was not the first time this kind of obnoxious act has taken place.
For no reason would a life created by God be wasted for it is a felony in the presents of the almighty. She would have bear the embarrassment and save her soul which is precious to God.
And when this kind of issue happened the school security should take it up, do proper investigation and sanction the convict based on their rules and not allowing the students to handle it on their way to avoid damages.

The undergraduate, Ayobiri Ayomide simply took her life due to unbearable shame which is for the record very foolish of any young lady. It must also be examined that the sucide rate among the youth is unnecessarily increasing. This issue calls for quick action from parents and society at large.
From this unfortunate issue, people should learn that the tongue can kill because if her unforgiving friends had not taken it upon themselves to insult the accused, the shame would have been less and she would not have committed suicide.
Suicide is an unfortunate situation that the family society and government should fight.
Youths should learn not take actions that can tanish their person and self esteem.

  33. Lesson NeWS! Seeing this issue in a pitiable way doesn’t qualify me a potential journalist because I was taught that journalism is based on objectivity and we should see things critically. The lesson is not just for some girls that wants to belong to the ‘So called big girls’ but also to many parents especially the mother’s that have failed to give their children good upbringing. This will serve as a lesson to us all that we should be contented with the little we have

  39. This is not enough reason for someone that is not the owner of her life to commit suicide. Since they find the stuff in her belongings. she would have find a way to figure how the things jumped inside her bag not thinking about suicide. Weather she was accused or not the fact still remains that people already sees her as a thief…This is not a good decision to take at all.. She have committed sin by taking her life… What a world…

  40. This is indeed an outrageous behavior…no one is to take his or her life because God is the giver and also the taker of that life which he has given to us

  41. Onuchukwu Chika Jennifer

From the look of things, i think Ayo is innocent. If she had been a thief, she would have swallowed the shame and moved on but her action justified her innocence. The World is filled with wicked beings looking for who to devour and Ayo was a perfect prey for them. Hmmmmm i sense setup here nevertheless, the case should be carefully investigated and the culprit or culprits brought to book. RIP DEAR.

  42. People will always go around saying whatever suits them about a person because they feel they know the individual, forgetting that there is power in the tongue. We should all learn from this. What a waste….

  43. Akukalia Louis

yes truely she did a very bad act by stealing but committing suicide was not best potion for her to take ,we humans we are so judgmental of what we do….
