Ugly scenes of police brutality resurfaced this morning in Onitsha Anambra State, when a group of police men opened fire on a woman and her mechanic in a bid to stop them from evading arrest.
Trouble began at popular and busy Owerri-Onitisha express road when police officers who were on patrol tried to stop a vehicle driven by a Mechanic who gave his name as Emeka. He was carrying the owner of the vehicle, a lady who gave her name as Ngozi Uwakwe. According to sources, the duo said they were test-running the vehicle to check the fault of her car.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the officers tried to stop the driver by hitting the mouth of their gun on the front headlamp of the passenger’s side of the car. The driver was said to have sped off in fear not knowing that the gun of the police officer got stuck in the headlamp of the car after it pierced through the headlamp metal.
The police patrol team allegedly gave him a Hollywood-style hot chase and on getting to Illodibe Service Lane, around Upper Iweka Axis, they opened fire, raining bullets on the vehicle which hit the four tires, fuel tank and door.
When the vehicle could no longer move, the’ police officers caught up with it, dragged the driver and the woman out and gave them the beating of their life, according to eye-witnesses. They tried to toe the vehicle but it could not move because of flat tires. The police officers then whisked the man and woman off the scene to a yet to be identified station.
