“Rev. Fathers Will Start Contesting Elections if Politicians Fail to Do the Right Thing” – Catholic Bishop

Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Jonas Benson Okoye

Auxiliary Bishop of Awka Diocese, Jonas Benson Okoye has said that Catholic Priests would begin to contest for political offices if politicians continue to perform as poorly as they are currently doing.

Bishop Okoye said this on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish, Amesi in Anambra State during Homily celebrated to mark the silver jubilee of the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Bishop Ebere Okpaleke.

Bishop Okoye said that the performance of politicians at all levels is disappointing, adding that the people are not happy with what elected office holders are doing.

He said that the Catholic community will give the politicians one more chance and if they failed to perform, Rev. Fathers will be prepared to join politics and contest elections.

The Bishop added that once Catholic Priests go into politics, no one else will get the positions until the priests are tired of contesting elections.

Bishop Okoye noted that though the Canon Law guiding the Catholic church says priests should not contest elections, if politicians did not improve their performance, the Church may have to review the Canon Law to make it possible for Rev. Fathers to go into politics.
