Prof. Umaru Pate Biography

Professor Umaru Pate is of the Department of Mass Communication, Bayero Univesity, Kano. He is an eminent scholar, a communication guru and an inspirational writer, a decisive commentator on national and international issues, an astute journalist and above all a mentor. Prof. Pate was born on the January 4th, 1964 in Adamawa state.


Prof. Pate had his early secondary school education at Government College Maiduguri and advanced level studies at the College of Preliminary Studies in Yola. He had his first degree in Mass Communication at the University of Maidugury, Borno State, after which he left for the University of Ghana Legon on fellowship of Master of Philosophy (M.phil) Degree in Communication studies which he completed in 1990. He enrolled for a Ph.D at the University of Maiduguri in 1993 and graduated in February 1997.


Professor Pate took appointment as a graduate assistant at the University of Maiduguri in October 1988 and immediately left for the University of Ghana Legon on fellowship of Master of Philosophy (M.phil) Degree in Communication studies which he completed in 1990. Before joining the teaching profession he had worked as a broadcast journalist, making hi mark in the industry within his brief sojourn in the industry. He became a Professor of Media and Society in October 20, 2007.

After a stint at the University of Maiduguri, as head of department, Prof. Pate moved to Bayero University, Kano, where he first assumed role as dean of the communication school, transforming the programme exponentially and placing it at the peak of national recognition. He was later made the pioneer Dean of the post-graduate school, Bayero, from where he was appointed Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, in December 2020.

Prof. Pate is also editorial advisor to more than ten communication journals in and out of Nigeria and serves as external examiner to over fifteen Universities in Nigeria and abroad. Some of the universities include: Lagos, Ibadan, Nsukka, Covenant, Jos, Babcock, Makurdi, ABU, Awka, Abuja, Leicester (UK), Freetown (Sierra Leone) and Tehran (Iran).

Professional Leadership

Prof. Pate is one of the major pillars of African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), Nigetia. He is currently holds the position as President of Association of Communication Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ACSPN). He was among the few communication scholars from Nigeria who traveled to Freetown Sierra Leon in 2017, for International edition of Idowu Sobowale conference.

Community Service/Consultancy Work

Prof. Pate is actively engaged in wider community services that include writing and commenting on national and international current affairs, offering capacity building services to media and civil society organization in and out of Nigeria, consulting for agencies and participating on official assignment at state and federal levels.

Prof. has been serving as a consultant to bilateral and multilateral agencies that include: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United States of Agency for International Development (USAID), British Department of International Development (DFID), National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Ford Foundation, Nigerian Universities Commission, NUC, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Nigeria Stability Response Project (NSRP), Friedrich Ebert Foundation of Germany, Panos Foundation of Washington, the Trust Newspapers, INEC, NTA, FRCN, National Population Commission, the National Broadcasting Commission and several state governments. Prof. Pate has served the UN system in Afghanistan, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Cameroons.

Prof. Pate has been life-time judge of the Wole Soyinka Investigative Journalism Prize and is on the advisory board of the Premium Times Centre of Investigative Journalism [PTCIJ].

In November, 2017, UNESCO headquarters in Paris appointed Pate as a regional director for Africa on the six persons Board of Directors of the prestigious International Network of UNESCO Professors in Communication (ORBICOM) with headquarters at the University of Quebec at Montreal, Canada.

Traditional Title

Prof. Pate is a holder of the traditional tile of “kaigama” in Adamawa state. It is amazing to know that Prof. Pate is a man of great courage who serves humanity, combining two tasking jobs: Journalism and a traditional ruler as the “Kaigama” of his state. This title represents the Chief of Defense Staff of the Emirate and the a number of the 12 Kingmakers of Adamawa which according to history, emerged from the reign of the Muslim founder of the state in 1809.


Prof. Pate has remained a source of inspiration to all the students he tutored at the University level and other citadels of learning here in Nigeria and abroad. He is one of the biggest names in the field of mass communication in Africa as his pedigree shows. He has impacted positively on the development of the media and the grooming of media teachers and practitioners in Nigeria.
