Prof. Sylvanus Ekwelie, Nigerian Communication Scholar

Prof. Sylvanus Ajana Ekwelie was born in Achalla, Anambra State, in 1936. He graduated best student from the Department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria, in 1967. Soon after, he proceeded to the University of Wisconsin in the USA, where he earned a Ph.D in Journalism. He taught in some American universities before returning to his alma mater to head the department in the early seventies.

Prof. Ekwelie belonged to a generation that considered teaching a sacred calling and believed that the students under them were to be protected.

Over the years, Professor Ekwelie has produced and influenced generations of the best of breed in communication, marketing, finance, oil and gas, public service, the academia and indeed all walks of life. He is a towering pillar in communication education, having taught several scholars who are vibrant Professors today. He has a father figure that inspires budding scholars to breakthrough in the profession.
