Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika Biography

There are names you hear in Nigeria’s Communication education landscape and you immediately recognize them as part of the pillars of the profession. This is in view of the fact that few female scholars have attained such enviable level as authorities in specific aspects of communication studies in Nigeria and beyond. Some female professors are not well known but the name Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika surely rings a remarkable bell.

Who is Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika?

Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika is of the Department of Mass Communication, the University of Lagos (UNILAG). She became a Professor in June, 2017 though with an effective date of August 11, 2016. She hails from Delta State, Nigeria. She is well published both locally and internationally with several publications and conference papers to her credit. Ogwezzy-Ndisika has made her mark in development communication and gender studies with ground-breaking publications to her credit.

Special Feat

Prof. Ogwezzy-Ndisika is the first female professor of Mass Communication in UNILAG. She was elevated to the rank of professor after sixteen years of full-time lecturing at the department. She was first appointed to the department on March 22nd 2001 as a lecturer II. She rose through the ranks and has had the opportunity to teach, supervise and mentor several communication students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Apart from being the first female professor produced in the department after over fifty years of its existence, Prof. Ogwezzy-Ndisika also made history in 2014 when she was the first female to be appointed as the Acting Head of the Department. During her two-year stint as head of the department, the department experienced tremendous growth and development.

Education

In 1991 she was the Best Graduating Student of English Department, University of Port Harcourt. The Delta State born scholar went further to bag a Post Graduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Mass Communication at the University of Lagos in 1995 and 1997 respectively, a Second Master’s Degree in Gender Development at the University of Sussex in 2001, UK and a Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Arts at University of Ibadan in 2005.

Remarkable texts

Among Ogwezzy-Ndisika’s textbooks which could be described as classic scholarly titles are African Communication Systems: Concepts, Channels and Messages published in 2008 by African Renaissance Books, and A functional approach to African communication systems Published by Concept Publications in 2008. These two texts have been cited by several authors, researchers and students while working on topics related to African Communication Systems. She has over forty (40) publications and twenty- eight (28) conference papers to her credit.

Contributions to the Industry

Prof. Ogwezzy-Ndisika is not only known for her classroom experience. She is also making impactful contributions in the communication industry and to the society in general in various ways. She has vast industry experience in broadcasting, public relations and advertising; and consults for various multilateral and bilateral agencies, management consulting firms and various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government of Nigeria. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of a leading national newspaper; member, Editorial Boards of Journals of Media and Communication Studies; Chair, Panel of Judges, 10th OAAN Poster Awards; and member, Panel of Judges for the 9th OAAN Poster Awards and Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting Award (WSIRA), 2008, 2012, 2015 2016 and 2017 editions; panelist, African Media Barometer-Nigeria 2011; reviewer of several technical documents; discussant and panelists at various fora; and produced several development documentaries.
