Oldest person in the world, Jamaica’s Violet Moss Brown is dead

The world’s oldest person, Jamaican supercentenarian Violet Moss Brown, has died at the age of 117.

She died on Friday September 15.

A close family member of the supercentenarian told LOOP NEWS that after a brief illness, Moss Brown died at the Fairfield Medical Centre in Montego Bay, where she was recently taken by family members.

“I came to look for her this afternoon and was told that she passed,” the  grieving family member of Moss Brown said.

Brown, of Duanvale in Trelawny, was born on March 10, 1900. She became world’s oldest person earlier this year after the death of previous oldest person, Emma Morano of Italy.

Her eldest child, Harold Fairweather, who was believed to be the world’s oldest living child with a parent alive, died a few months ago.

In an exclusive interview with Loop News last year, Brown reflected on life growing up in post-emancipation Jamaica, as the country remained under British rule and the island’s black majority remained oppressed.

“It was like slavery. It was very hard but likkle by likkle we have come up to be a good place,” Brown said.

Declaring that “the best time is now”, Brown said she was enjoying life and is not sitting around waiting to die. She particularly enjoyed sitting on her veranda and watching pedestrians and cars pass by.
