Oguta is one of the most-sort-after tourist destinations in Nigeria. The town is located in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. It is well known for the famous Oguta lake, one of Nigeria’s top tourist attractions.

Due to the rich cultural heritage of Oguta people, there are several tourist attractions in the town. One of them is Ogene Nkirika Festival.

Ogene Nkirika is a festival held annually in Oguta Ameshi as part of events preceding the Omerife festival, which is likened to the new yam festival in Oguta land. Oguta Ameshi is the heart of Oguta land.

After Ogene Nkirika, comes the Ogene Oma festival which ushers in the Omerife festival where different families cook special delicacies using yam and sharing same with friends and family members. Ogene Nkirika is celebrated every August and it is a beautiful carnival involving exciting music, dancing, merriment, and dressing up in outrageous costumes. Some young men dress as women, depicting different trades and ages, some others dress in Halloween costumes while others just dance and parade along Ameshi road in Oguta, which is the meeting point of all displays and fun.

The year 2021 edition of the festival was colourful and eventful. Watch the video below to appreciate what happened at the Ogene Nkirika festival 2021.
