In the past three years no month has passed without at least two reported cases of suicide that took place in Nigeria but November has just broken that jinx.
Media reports show that only one suicide incident occurred in Nigeria in the entire month of November.
This came after 10 cases were reported in the month of October, recording the highest in just one month in 2021.
If there were any other suicide incidents anywhere in the country they were not reported in the media.
This is the first time in about three years that Nigeria would not be witnessing more than one suicide incident in an entire month, based on media reports. This single case involves the report of a man who allegedly took his own life in Abuja after losing his company’s N150,000 on betting.
Nigeria witnessed an unprecedented spate of suicides in 2019, especially with media coverage of such incidents. Some schools of thought have argued that suicide incidents had existed in Nigeria possibly on a large scale but most of such incidents were never reported in the media. Well, 2019 saw a number of incidents reported in social and mainstream media. But 2020 witnessed a slight drop in suicide incidents in Nigeria as reported in the media. Also, the leading method of suicide shifted from use of sniper insecticide which came tops in 2019, to hanging which topped in 2020. We continue our record on suicide incidents in 2021.
We move to the month of November. Reports show that only one suicide incident in Nigeria which took place in the month of November was reported in the media. This is the first time in about three years since we started this study that one suicide incident was reported to have taken place in Nigeria.
Recall that our study is focused on reported incidents in the media. We take note of suicide incidents which were captured in the media. There was one other instance where a medical doctor was reported to have committed suicide in November but the man’s family came out and debunked the story as false. This means one suicide incident took place in Nigeria in the month of November based on media reports.
