Mosquitoes Invade, Occupy UNIPORT Teaching Hospital

Decaying Facility at UPTH

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) is always in the news. Some of the constant features of the news focus are decay of facilities in the hospital, poor management of the establishment, incessant strike action by Doctors, and unfriendly attitude of a number of nurses there. Top on the food chain of troubles bedeviling the hospital today is millions of mosquitoes that have not only invaded the hospital but have occupied the territories within and outside the facility. The story of mosquitoes in the hospital has been a topic of discussion on several radio stations based in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. We hear that mosquitoes have even become patients in the hospital and for you to survive the situation you better give the mosquitoes names so they can see you as a friend and socialise with you.

Jokes apart, a teaching hospital should not have such a worrisome story. The question is this: Is it only UPTH that has scary stories of facility and management challenges or do you know of any other teaching hospital in such an embarrassing state? Authorities should know about this.

I dont think its only UPTH that experience these embarrasing challenges. Mosquitoes are carriers of malaria and to be in a hospital, will cause further harm to the patients.
Solution: Government should provide mosquitoe nets and insecticides, and if possible fumigate the hospital environment.

The hospitals are not cautious of their patients. Hospitals like Boronu hospital, Onitsha should learn how to keep their hospital and it’s environment clean because mosquitoes can cause another problem for the health of the patients.

UPTH is not the only teaching hospital experiencing that challenges, there was also a case in university of Ilorin teaching hospital(UITH) where Mrs. Oluwakemi Elizabeth Oduwaiye, a United Kingdom-based
surgeon accused doctors at the University of Ilorin
Teaching Hospital of causing the death of her 69-year old
father through medical negligence.she was said 2 have advised the father to go to the hospital when found out that the father is suffering from abdominal pains which needs abdominal CT scan but due to facilities and management challenges,it wasn’t done and the father died after 9days(26th November 2015)..if being checked properly, you will find out that 90% of teaching hospitals are having challenges about their facilities and management..Nigeria needs to do something in order to conquer these challenges on hospitals to avoid untimely death of patients(group no:10)…(quiz no:25)

Nigerian hospitals ad there lack of facilities. Hw can hospital,a teaching hospital for dat matter. what are they teaching?nawao (111)

  21. Okeke Chioma Onyinye

Benue state teaching hospital as well lacks adequate personnel. The toilet facilities are damaged and there is no replacement, the patients now resort to using bowl to take water from the drum or bucket. It’s so devastating that most of the wards, the windows and mosquito nets are fallen off thereby leaving the patient at the mercy of mosquitoes. I plead with the Government to endeavor to look into all hospitals to make it more hygienic and suitable for the patients health.(98)

  22. Nnabuenyi Samuel Somto

    In accordance to my distinctive opinion , I quote;
“The human life should be adhered to with serious attention and affection and not mosquito or malaria infection”.
Why will a hospitalized patient face such impudent and catastrophic situation of mosquito using them as lunch and blood bags. I came to hospital to be treated with proper care and not mosquito massacre.
UPTH should propound some other means of totally eradicating this mosquito problem if it still wants to remain in existence. This is not only a plaque in UPTH but also in LASTH and others. I instinct strongly that WHO(world health organization) should join hands , all palms should be on deck to eliminate this catastrophic situation and life’s should be taken seriously like they treat mere silver and gold.

  23. The state of affairs at UPTH is a very bad case. A hospital shouldn’t lack basic amenities and able to work workers. But I must note that this problem is not peculiar to UPTH. At UNTH Enugu the rate with which doctors go on strike is equivalent to the damages done in UPTH by mosquitoes. I urge government and some rich nigerians to support these teaching hospitals with equipments and mosquito nets and government should not delay health workers salaries so that they can take good care of their patients.(19)

At UNTH Enugu, the rate at which doctors go on strike is equivelent to the damages done in UPTH by mosquitoes. I urge government and rich nigerians to support teaching hospitals with equipments and mosquitoe nets and government should not delay doctors salaries as this will make them develop indifference attitude towards their patients.(19)

  26. Okeke Chioma Onyinye

  30. The abandonment of public property have become so terrible that government should do something urgently. The barbaric attitude received from nurses are nothing to write home about, a typical example of such negligence was the case of University of Lagos (unilag) teaching hospital where a final year student of accountancy in the school died due to negligence of the doctors. So pathetic, government should provide more facilities for hospitals that will enable them curb this deadly situation

  46. We are prepared to take control of the mosquitoes. We can reduce the mosquitoes to a tolerable numbers, if not eliminate them. Funding is an issue. Where can the Hospital acquire the required funding?
