Her name surely rings a huge bell especially in the social media enclave. Toke Makinwa is undoubtedly one of the most controversial social media celebrities in Nigeria.  She is a famous On-Air Personality (OAP) whose off-radio comments have generated serious traffic for numerous blogs in Nigeria.

Who is Toke Makinwa?

Born 3 November 1984,  The University of Lagos graduate shot into limelight after the premiere of her late night radio show, “Rhythms of the Night”.Toke is known to be a very vocal celeb that is never shy from making statements that are sometimes termed controversial. She has huge media presence especially due to her social media comments and appearance of her beautiful face on major magazines such as Complete Fashion Magazine, City People, ThisDay Style, Exquisite Magazine, among others.

Growing Up

Toke was born in Abuja, Nigeria. Later on her parents relocated to Lagos. She is the second of four children. Toke did not have it entirely rosy while growing up. She lost both of her parents to a fire accident when she was 8 years old. She was subsequently raised by Mr.and Mrs. Akinyelure, her foster parents. Was Toke Makinwa has become today reflects nothing about her pathetic childhood as a young girl who lost her parents early and was raised by foster parents. Education

Toke Makinwa attended the Federal Government Girls’ College in Oyo State. She proceeded to the University of Lagos, where she earned a BA degree in English and literature.

Career

Toke has never hidden her passion for broadcasting early in life. She had her first experience as a broadcaster even before she gained admission into UNILAG. She is presently known for hosting The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM. She launched her late night show Rhythm of the Night in 2010. That was when she began to gradual row in popularity among radio audience in Lagos and beyond, especially due to her engaging presentations skills. Together with two other radio personalities and colleagues, Tosyn Bucknor and Oreka Godis, The trio co-hosted Fly Time Entertainment’s online show, 3 Live Chicks. This turned out to be a hit programme with huge followership. Toke is also a very popular anchor and co-presenter of programmes in the entertainment industry. She hosted the 25th edition of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria Pageant in 2010 and continues to be a fashion icon. She also hosted the 2014 Hip Hop Magazine show, Trending. In 2015, she became a co-host of the syndicated Moments talk show (Nigeria) on Ebony Life Television. Toke became the brand ambassador of United Africa Company (UAC) Nigeria in 2013. She also signed a deal with Nestle in 2014 as the new face of maggi. Toke has really made a mark in the entertainment industry.

Vloger

Toke is also a popular vloger in Nigeria. She launched her YouTube Vlog series, Toke Moments, in 2014. The Vlog focuses on Dos and Donts of relationships. The Vlog is also known for being the platform where most of her controversial comments on relationship tips have emanated from.

Creative Works

Toke is not just an OAP or social media influencer, She is also eager to unleash her creative potentials through any means. She released her memoir On Becoming in November 2016. The book contains some of her controversial views on issues in life especially the ones concerningher personal life. The book talks about her personal struggles and addresses the betrayal of her now ex-husband, Maje Ayida. She went on a book tour to promote the book. The tour included Nigeria, South Africa, the U.S, the U.K, and parts of East Africa. The book went far in terms of sales.

Toke also made real her dream to own a brand in the fashion world. In 2017, she launched a handbag line under her label, Toke Makinwa Luxury. Marriage

Toke married Maje Ayida, a fitness health instructor, whom she had been dating for eight years, on the 15th of January 2014. She separated from Ayida after allegedly discovering that he had impregnated his ex-girlfriend. On the 5th of October 2017, her marriage to Ayida was dissolved by a Lagos High Court.

Awards

Toke’s exceptional performance as an OAP has brought her recognitions and honours in form of awards. She was honoured in 2013 by Nigeria Broadcasters’ Awards in 2013 as the Outstanding Female Presenter of the Year. She was ELOY Awards’ Style Influencer of the Year in 2014. She won the Most Influential Young Nigerian in Media award in 2017, given by Avance Media. Africa Youth Award selected her among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans in 2018. She has also been nominated for numerous other prestigious awards, including Nigeria Entertainmnet Awards’ Radio OAP of the Year, and Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards’ Favourite Nigerian On Air Personality, both of which she lost to Daddy Freeze in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Advocate for Female Independence

This could be described as Toke’s most controversial ‘calling’. She is not willing to shift grounds when it comes to tolerance in a relationship. She beliefs tolerance shouldn’t amount to accommodating ‘romantic slavery’. Her numerous views on relationship have generated controversies in the past. After walking out of her marriage to popular fitness expert, Maje Ayida, over alleged infidelity issues, media personality, Toke became an advocate for female independence among other feminism related issues. The captivating and daring radio personality who recently revealed plans to remarry if she finds a man after her heart has stated that she would not hesitate to opt out again if she doesn’t find happiness in the union.

According to her, though tolerance is important in marriage, there should be a limit to which a woman should accommodate a man’s excesses, which is why she would dump her next marriage if she is unhappy in it.

“If tolerating bull shit is what you guys call happy marriage, please count me out. I am not afraid of being alone. If I give it another chance and I am unhappy I will leave again. Call me crazy or whatever but I am not your average and I will always choose me first. Yes! Tolerance is prime shouldn’t mean there should be no limit to the bull shit one should take. If you men really love the tolerance of our mothers I suggest that you all go marry them and God forbid our daughters end up like us or our mothers. A woman unafraid of walking alone is a dangerous one, her level of freedom will intimidate many but will also inspire the right energy, she is clothed in strength and dignity”, she said in an interview.
