When it has to do with perfect interpretation of movie scripts to fit into any role, some people are truly talented in making acting look very realistic. There are Nollywood personalities who are naturally gifted in acting. They interpret roles without stress. When you watch them neatly fit into a character you wonder whether they were born and bred in Hollywood, the leading home of acting as a profession in the world. Once you sight their faces on the promotional posters or trailers of any movie you are ready to go any length to be among the first to see the movie once it is released. Such rare qualities are very few in Nollywood which is now unfortunately dominated accidental actors and actresses. One name among talented actresses that have continued to make the Nigerian movie industry a brand to reckon with is Maryam Booth, the most captivating and realistic Kannywood actress, in terms of character interpretation and role expression.

Maryam is among the Kannywood personalities whose dominance in Nigeria’s Hausa movie industry transcends fan base across ethnic groups in the country. Who is Maryam Booth?

Maryam Ado Muhammed popularly known as Maryam Booth is a multi-talented actress, fashion designer, accessories dealer, film maker and compère. This beautiful actress was born on October 28, 1993 in Kano State. Maryam is the daughter of Zianab Booth, veteran Kannywood actress. She is of mixed heritage. Her grandmother is Fulani while her grandfather is Scottish. Maryam is one gifted actress who has impressive skills in playing a wide range of roles in Kannywood.

Education

Maryam is one of the well educated actresses in the Kannywood industry. Her passion for acting did not stop her from attaining a high level of education in different fields. Maryam attended Ebony Nursery School, Kano State. She had her secondary education at Ahmadiyya Secondary School, Kano State. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business administration from the Mantissa College in Malaysia and also has a Masters degree in Project Management and Cinematography. She also has a diploma from Bayero University, Kano.

Career

Maryam joined the acting profession very early in life, precisely at the age of eight. Her first role and her first success came to her at that early age. Her mother, Zainab Booth, is a veteran Kannywood actress and this contributed to her early introduction into acting, apart from her passion for acting. Her brother, Ahmed Booth, and cousin, Ramadan Booth are also Kannywood actors. So acting flows in Maryam’s lineage. Even while studying at school, Maryam was acting in movies. The movie that brought her to limelight was Dijangala. It was directed by Ali Nuhu, one of the best actors in the Kannywood industry. Maryam and Ali Nuhu played roles in that movie as orphan siblings. The movie was released in 2007. Maryam’s presence in Kannywood industry is phenomenal, with memorable roles in classy movies that has made her a cherished idol among many Kannywood fans. Among her popular movies are Jalil (2020), The Milkmaid (2017), and Hakkunde (2017).

Though her mother was already an actress before Maryam joined Kannywood, it was her aunt, Bello Mohammed, that introduced her to the movie industry. That was how Maryam found herself in Dijangala and put up an impressive performance that began her journey to the top of the industry. Since her first movie at the age of eight, Maryam has played prominent roles in many movies produced by Kannywood. Acting is not the only field where she is gifted to excel. Maryam is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of her own MBooth Beauty Parlour where she’s a leading makeup artist, a designer and dealer of accessories and fashionable clothes. She is also a prominent media personality and an event host of huge repute in Nigeria She co-hosted the prestigious Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards  with TV personality and top comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka, in 2019.

Personal life

Maryam is an easy-going actress loved by her fans though she has had challenging moments in her life. She once had a romantic relationship with a guy which lasted for five years. However, when the couple wanted to make the relationship permanent by getting married, the guy’s family objected on the grounds that Maryam who was only 18 years old at that time was an actress. The guy’s family made it clear that they did not want their son to marry an actress, let alone a very prominent one like Maryam. This was a major blow in her life but she eventually survived the emotional trauma and moved on. Much later, in February, 2020, Maryam had another unsavory emotional hit as her nude video which lasted for just three minutes was released online. The video showed her while she was dressing up in a room. The incident generated so much attention on social media. Maryam accused her ex-boyfriend of blackmail being the mastermind of the leaked video, an allegation the young man denied. Again, Maryam survived this controversy, especially as the major big names in Kannywood rallied round to support her. She is really bigger than some of these challenges and moves on after a while, with her image and brand image still intact.

Maryam is one of the few Nigerian actresses whose story can make a young girl who never considered acting to gladly switch to this profession. Her dedication to the profession, ability to interpret details of any role she is given to play, and level of decency in handling her celebrity status are very impressive.
