Government owned newspapers used to be the pillars of the print media landscape in Nigeria. At federal and state level these newspapers had large audience base and reporters of great repute. The situation is no longer same today as most of them are either defunct or appear in the newsstands once in a blue moon. There is no federal government-owned newspaper in Nigeria today as the Daily Times which used to be the only ne is now in private hands. Most state-owned newspapers died long ago, to the extent that the present generation of journalism students might not even know of existence and enviable exploits of such newspapers in the past. We decided to fill that gap in knowledge by providing a list of newspaper titles published by state governments in Nigeria.
Here is a list of State-owned newspapers in Nigeria. As we stated earlier, most of them are either defunct or published irregularly. Even where they are still published the quality is unbelievably poor in terms of production and story content, when compare to privately owned newspapers. But these are the newspapers that were the pride of some states in the past but they were stifled off the newsstand by fierce competition from privately-owned newspapers and a combination of other factors among which are poor funding, lack of advert, attitude of staff to work, and overbearing influence of the state government leading to lack of editorial independence. .
