Kano University Students Vandalize Properties After School Failed To Save Drowning Student

The scene of the incident
Students of Kano State University of Science and Technology, KUST Wudil went on rampage today destroying vehicles, buildings and bank facilities before barricading Wudil-Gaya road in Kano State.
According to DAILY NIGERIAN, the students were protesting the alleged failure of the school authorities to save the life of a drowning student. The victim was identified as Farouk Abubakar, a Level 300 student of Biology (Education).
While speaking about the incident, the president of the Students Union Government, SUG, of the university, Muhammad Muhammad, said the school authorities had contacted local lifesavers, known as Sarkin Ruwa, to rescue the student but said they don’t operate at night.
“The incident happened around 6:30pm on Wednesday. When the matter was reported to the school management, the dean of students affairs pleaded with Sarkin Ruwa to save the student but said they could not work at night,” he said.
Narrating how the incident happened, Mr Muhammad said “three students went for swimming and got sunk, two of them managed to survive while the other one, Farouk Abubakar, drowned.
He said after the news broke out, the students misconstrued the reaction of the school authorities and staged the riot.
It was also gathered that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Shehu Alhaji, had appealed for calm when he visited the river to supervise the recovery of the body on Thursday.
Mr Alhaji, a professor, reportedly declared Thursday May 3 and Friday May 4 lecture-free day in honour of the deceased student.
The V.C added that the mid semester break is extended to two weeks and asked students to vacate school premises.
