Just In: UI Closed Over Students’ Protest

University of Ibadan

The University of Ibadan (UI) has been shut by management of the institution over presents by students against what they described as insensitivity of management.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that management of the institution ordered the closure of the institution Monday, May 29, directing students to vacate the campus on or before 6pm.

It was reported that the students had earlier marched across the streets of Ibadan protesting what they called insensitivity of management to the plight of students.

It could be recalled that students at a congress on Saturday passed a resolution to disrupt the forthcoming examination supposed to have commenced in June, if students were not provided with identity cards. They also requested the authorities to constitute the Students’ Welfare Board and also allow use of cooking appliances had been banned in hostels.

NAN further reported that the Director of Communications and Publication of the University, Olatunji Oladejo, said the University was closed to avert other crisis.

He also said the examination has been shifted to July and undergraduates were to resume back in school on July 17.

View: What I see from this story is that students were protesting because they wanted management to provide ID card to students and also allow cooking appliances in hostels. And they waited until few days to exam before embarking on the protest. What do you think about this action?
