John Momoh, Most Successful Television Station Owner in Nigeria

Nigeria’s broadcast media industry is fiercely competitive with very vibrant privately owned radio and television houses giving government owned establishments a run for their money. It was in 1992 when the broadcast media landscape in Nigeria was liberalized that private stations joined government owned stations in the business. But the private stations have given government media a huge gap in the industry, with high quality broadcast technology and programme content that is close to what obtains in the developed world. Once private individuals got into the ownership of broadcast houses the story changed and the industry became vibrant and fiercely competitive.

One of the media organizations that came into the industry and began a journey to conquer the market with top quality offer to the public is Channels Television, winner of best “Television of the Year” Award from Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) 13 times. This station came into existence in 1995 and began a journey to conquer the television landscape in Nigeria with unbelievable level of success recorded so far in achieving that goal. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of this station whose vision and dream made Channels Television a reality is John Momoh, a veteran broadcaster himself. He is now one of the all time biggest media owners in the history of broadcasting in Nigeria.

Who is John Momoh?

John Olatchy Momoh was born on July 1, 1957 in Lagos, Nigeria. He is happily married to Olusola Momoh, the Vice Chairman of Channels Television. She is also a broadcaster and they are blessed with three children.

Ownership of Channels Television

John Momoh founded Channels Television in 1992. The station has won the Nigeria’s “Television Station of the Year” Award 13 times from the NMMA. The station also won the African Achievers Awards Trust’s 2014 “Best Television Station in Africa”.  The station is also the first Nigerian broadcaster to be nominated at the International Emmy for the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award.

Education

John Momoh graduated from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with a B.Sc. (honours) in Mass Communication and a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy. He also has professional Diplomas from the UK’s Thomson Foundation and the University of Manchester. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard Business School and a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

Career

John Momoh has had a very prosperous career in broadcasting. He  is a renowned broadcast journalist with vast industry experience spanning over three and half decades. He has had a distinguished career in news television broadcasting and is widely recognized in Nigeria as a transformative industry pioneer. Prior to founding Channels Television, John Momoh worked as News Anchor, Senior Reporter and Senior Producer for Nigeria’s National Radio and Television Stations, Radio Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority.

Awards and Special Feats

John Momoh excelled as a practicing broadcaster even before establishing Channels Television. As an employee he distinguished himself by winning several notable professional awards among which are the maiden edition of the Nigerian Media Merit Awards “News Anchor of the Year” and, the Nigerian Union of Journalists Award for the “Newscaster of the Year”.
He was a former General Secretary of Nigeria’s Independent Broadcasters Association and Chairman of the League of Nigerian Broadcasters. He was also honoured in December 2005 by the Federal Republic of Nigeria as an “Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).”
Shortly after that, in 2006, he was honoured with a Lifetime achievement Award by the Nigerian Information Society and, two years later, he was nominated as Nigeria’s ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the Fate Foundation.
He is a Fellow of The International Visitor Programme (IVP), an initiative of the United States Information Agency, a “Chevening” Fellow and a Fellow of the “African Future Leaders”, both initiatives of the British Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In June 2013, he received the Lagos Business School’s Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences based in New York and has served as a JUROR for the International Emmy Awards. He is also serving as a Juror for the Association for International Broadcasters (AIB) awards. John Momoh is a Red Cross Ambassador and Patron of a select number of charitable organizations in Nigeria.
