The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano has said that the state government would commence recruitment of school teachers in relevant subjects by next year.
Gov Obiano made this known during the opening ceremony of the 2017 Principals Retreat held at Madonna Renewal Centre, Nkpor.
As part of programme of his administration in improving performance and review standard, through training and retraining of workers to increase productivity, the Anambra state government organized retreat through the State Post Primary School Service Commission.
The retreat with the theme, “effective teaching and learning in Anambra State Secondary Schools for optimal performance”, attracted principals of about 257 secondary schools in the state.
The Governor while addressing the principals said the recruitment of teachers which has been factored into the 2018 budget, was aimed at addressing the number of students per teacher ratio in secondary schools that presently stand at 500 students per teacher.
The governor revealed that the quality of education has not dropped under his watch instead, it has risen to an all time high of about 72 percent this year.
According to him, the drop in the number of students from Anambra who sat for external examinations was because his government shut down all miracle centres in the state.
He urged teachers and parents to work more in collaboration in moulding the character of the children and solicited the support of the Principals towards the realization of his second term bid.
In her address ,the Commissioner for Education, Prof Kate Omenugha pointed out that the retreat had become imperative to ensure that the school administrators fully understand the vision of the present administration so as to effectively drive the ongoing revolution in the state’s education sector.
The Chairman, Willie Obiano Re-election Campaign Committee, Chief Victor Umeh said Gov Obiano’s genuine commitment towards worker’s welfare, upgrade of school infrastructure and financial interventions are legacies that must be guarded jealously, acknowledging that the reason for the success story of Anambra State across all sectors, was the character of APGA as a political party.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Chaiperson of the Post Primary School Service Commission, Lady Joy Ulasi said the retreat is aimed at advancing the promotion of effective teaching and learning in the State secondary schools through quality assurance indices and maintenance of discipline among teachers and students.
For the transition Chairman, Idemili North Council Area, Bar Ralph Nnabuife, school principals as opinion influencers have a major role in ensuring that the state education system does not collapse due to bad leadership.
Some participants including the Principal, Community Secondary School, Ozubulu, Comrade Aloy Anigbogu and his Holy Cross Secondary School, Umuawulu counterpart, Mrs Amaka Anaekwe while commending the State government for the capacity building, said they were now better equipped to perform their duties as the new academic session opens.
