Mallam Garba Shehu is a seasoned Nigerian Journalist, politician and the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari. He was also a long-time writer and columnist for the Nigeria Premium.
He was born on the 12th of December, 1962 in Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria. He spent his early childhood in Dutse with his parents, Shehu Kofar Mata, and Jummai who are originally from Kano. He did not have it all rosy while growing up. His father was a driver while his mother sold sugar. Garba’s life was greatly influenced by the late Emir Ado Bayero.
Garba earned his First School Leaving Certificate from the Dutse Primary School in 1970. He proceeded to obtain his West African Secondary School Certificate from the Barewa College, Zaria in 1975. He obtained a Bachelors Degree from Bayero University, Kano in 1981. He proceeded for his compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigeria Army School of Education, Ilorin in 1981.
Garba’s career shows he has depth experience with impressive records. He began his career at the Nigerian Television Authority, Sokoto as a Correspondent in 1982. He then joined Network News Lagos as an Energy Correspondent in 1984. His profile began to rise with his performance in the industry as he navigated through different media houses where he made his made at various times. Between 1986 and 1997, Garba Shehu has worked as Senior Writer; Features Editor; Assistant Editor and (Sunday) Editor; Sunday Triumph; Editor, Daily Triumph; and MD/Editor-in-Chief; Triumph Publishing Company Limited, Kano. He had served as the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors for eight years. Shehu also served as director, Media and Publicity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council. He still writes for Nigeria Premium times as a columnist.
Garba became the General Manager Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria in 1997. He was appointed as Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity by President Buhari After the 2015. This was after the general elections which brought the All Progressive Congress (APC) to power. In 2019, he was reappointed into the same position after President Buhari won his re election bid. This was a confirmation of his laudable performance in the president’s first tenure.
Garba is a devout Muslim. He is among personalities who have been able to combine a good family life with tasking job. He got married to his wife, Hafsat in 1986, while he was 27 years old. Their wedding is blessed with 4 children, one boy and 3 girls.
Garba is one of the few personalities with impressive pedigree in his professional career prior to his appointment as SSA to the president. He is one of the voices always keeping the public abreast of trends in President Buhari’s administration, taking up critics with fact-based responses he presents on his social media handles and other platforms. Garba is a role model to many Nigerians especially because of his accomplishments in his journalism career before taking up political appointments.
