Higher education in Nigeria has come a long way. General, higher education is been recognized as a fundamental instrument for the construction of a knowledge economy and the development of human capitals all over the world. Nigeria has produced scholars who have excelled in their various disciplines and are of high reckoning across the world. Here is a list of first Nigerian Professors in various disciplines. This is list seems to be debatable as some of the Professors are clearly the first in their disciplines while some others are subjects of arguments as to whether they were pioneer professors of their disciplines or not. For instance, in the case of Prof. Chike Obi believed to be the first Professor of Mathematics in Nigeria, there are strong arguments that the first Nigeria professor of Mathematics is Olubunmo Adegoke from Ekiti State. In fact, some have argued that Prof. Adegoke was among those that assessed Prof. Chike Obi as a professor. Well, what we have here is a list of generally held views backed by existing facts regarding the first professors in the various disciplines. The list is debatable, as we pointed out earlier.
