Doctors Remove 1.6kg Of Jewellery, Money And Watch From Woman’s Stomach

In a bizarre case, doctors in India removed 1.6 kilograms of jewellery, 90 coins and a wristwatch from the stomach of a 22-year-old woman. See SWNS story SWOCjewel. When in the last few days Runi Khatun, a resident of Margram town in West Bengal, India, started throwing up after every meal, and complained of abdominal pain, her family took her to the government hospital at Rampurhat located about 9 km away. “The patient was admitted to our hospital with complaints of nausea and abdominal pain on July 18. On conducting sonography and x-ray tests, we detected the presence of metal objects in her stomach. We then decided to conduct a surgery to remove the foreign objects,” informed Siddhartha Biswas, the head of the surgery department in the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, who led the medical team that conducted the surgery. The surgery was conducted on July 24 and lasted for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Sonography and x-ray tests revealed metal in her stomach – so surgeons at Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, in India, operated to remove it.
Surgeons removed chains, nose rings, earrings, trinkets, bangles, and anklets during the 75-minute procedure, that also revealed 90 coins and a wristwatch. Wow.
Dr Siddhartha Biswas, head of the surgery department who led the operation, said the woman had ingested gold, copper and brass items.
It is believed the woman, who is undergoing psychiatric treatment, may have taken the items from her brother’s costume jewellery shop.

Her family said: “We noticed that the ornaments were disappearing. But whenever we questioned her, she started crying and revealed nothing.”
The woman’s mother added: “Despite keeping an eye on her, she somehow managed to swallow all these objects. She was not well for the past two months.
“Before admitting her at the Rampurhat Government Hospital, we had taken her to various private doctors and she was on medication without any result.”
Dr Biswas confirmed the patient, from Margram in West Bengal, India, is stable, and she will soon be discharged.
