Premier League giants, Manchester United Football club, have lost an 87-yearold record they have been holding in Europe to bottom placed team in Italian Seria A – Benevento.
United has been holding the record as the club in the elite division with the worst league start among Europe’s top five leagues.
United lost their first 12 league games in the 1930/1931 season. But they have just been overtaken by Benevento after the Italian club’s home loss to Sassuolo in a Seria A game on Sunday.
Benevento which just gained promotion this season has just lost their 13th straight league game. They now hold the record of worst league start among Europe’s top five leagues.
It could be recalled that Manchester United made the worst start in their history by losing their first 12 league matches in a row in 1930/31 season. The dozen defeats included back-to-back thrashings at Old Trafford, 6-0 by Huddersfield Town and then 7-4 by Newcastle United. The Reds eventually lost 27 out of 42 league matches in 1930/31, conceding 115 goals.
