Curriculum for Information and Media Studies Degree Programme in Nigerian Universities

Information and Media Studies programme is another very interesting addition to the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. So many people would like to learn how develop video games, techniques for 2D and 3D animation so they can produce their own cartoon films, graphic design techniques, and such other practical realities in today’s digital world that have turned into money-spinning ventures. This course recognizes the importance of connecting media theory learned in the classroom to real-world experiences. It is a programme designed to provide a synergy between the study of information as a science and mediated communication as a practice. The programme draws on advances in information technology and its applications in mass media and media studies. It does not just offer the basic communication courses you already know. It makes you completely digital, ready to adapt to evolving technologies in the sophisticated society.

 CMS 101        INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION I

A global overview of the history, institutions and functions of communication in human society; an examination of the concepts, levels/categories and elements of human communication; survey of the role and influence of cultural beliefs and practices as well as changing technologies in human communication.

CMS 102        INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION II

Consideration of media communications as a sub-type of human communication; an overview of the progress; models, and elements of media communications; survey of the media, including their adjuncts are discussed. It also presents an examination of the characteristics, functions, contents, operations and impact of the media as well as national media systems and communication between/across nations.

CMS 103        HISTORY OF NIGERIAN MEDIA

This course traces the major trends in the development of the communication and media in Nigeria; as well as their adaptation and contribution to the political, religious, economic and social development in Nigeria.

CMS 104        WRITING FOR THE MEDIA

Instruction and practice in writing for the media with the major emphasis on development of effective styles in professional communications and proficiency in grammar and the use of language.

CMS 105        TRADITIONAL AFRICAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

Survey of African traditional communication forms, channels, contents, technologies and institutions. Students are exposed to the significance and influence of these traditional structures on modern communication systems, as well as on contemporary African Political Culture and development.

CMS 106        INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER & COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

Instruction and practice in computer operations aimed at enabling the students to acquire the basic knowledge and skills essential for communication professionals.

CMS 107        INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS I

Role of statistics in social science inquiry; Nature of measurement;  presentation of data. Central values measures of deviation, correlation, nature of sampling; Probabilities and normal distribution, inference hypotheses testing.  Test of significance.

CMS 201        FEATURE WRITING

This is a practical course designed to enable students to become proficient in preparing a publishable feature articles. Focus is on writing, analysing and marketing feature articles for offline and online newspapers and magazines. Subject research, investigation of editorial needs, ethical and legal problems and manuscript preparation are also discussed in this course. It provides excellent material from the Nigerian and foreign news media for study and imitation.

CMS 202        CRITICAL AND REVIEW WRITING

Prerequisite; news writing or consent of instructor; theory and practice of reviewing the arts for newspapers. Students write reviews of plays, movies, television programmes, musical and dance events.

CMS 203        EDITING & GRAPHICS OF COMMUNICATION

Students are taught how to write and edit copy in a style appropriate to the news media. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of articles and photographs in photo editing for newspaper publications, online and multimedia. Editing symbols and news proofreader’s symbols will be used in this course.

CMS 204        THEORIES OF COMMUNICATION

Exploration and analysis of major theories that deal with the nature, uses and effects of media and communication; the relationship between theory and research and the relevance of the latter to the success of the former are discussed.

CMS 205        FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION RESEARCH

The primary aim of this course is to introduce students to the logic and methods of research in communication. Principles of research design, instrumentation, data collection and analysis are taught to enable students apply them effectively.

CMS 206        INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS II

The nature of statistical methods. The role and significance of statistics in Social Research; Frequency distribution; Measures of Central Tendency – Mean, Mode, Median; Measures of dispersion – Range, Variance, Standard Deviation; Elementary Probability Theory; Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions. Tests of Hypotheses; small sample tests – t – test, x2 – test and F – test; Regression analysis; Analysis of Variance; Time series analysis; Index numbers; Sources of Statistical Data in Nigeria.

CMS 207        NIGERIAN CONSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

A chronological and critical survey of the development of the Nigerian Constitution from colonial times to the present; the developmental processes and features of the Richards Constitution, the McPherson Constitution, the Littleton Constitution, the Independence Constitution, The Republican Constitution, and the 1979 Constitution are all highlighted.

 CMS 209: MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

This course empowers students to learn, and to pursue lifelong learning. It aims at educating students to become media and information literate, to be informed and rational citizens. The course also equips students with competencies needed to seek and enjoy the full benefits of media exposure. It embodies essential knowledge about (a) the functions of media, libraries, archives and other information providers in democratic societies, (b) the conditions under which news media and information providers can effectively perform those functions, and (c) how to evaluate the performances of these functions by assessing the content and services they offer.

CMS 211 & CMS 304           MEDIA ATTACHMENT

This is a compulsory course for all Students, who are sent to relevant organizations for practical experience. It is a supervised activity and students must supply a weekly log-book and portfolio for all work carried out during the period of internship, the least should be 12 weeks in each of the two sessions.

IMS 201: INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION AND MEDIA STUDIES

This course provides definition of data, information, and information technology. It traces the history of electronic communications and digital computer systems, components of communications system, digital computer and their interfaces. The course will also look at electromagnetic wave spectrum, their utilization and radiation effects. It will also introduce students to analogue and digital radio communication, telephony system, satellite communication and VSAT. Students will also be Introduced to computer networks: LAN, WAN and INTERNET as a typical information and communication technology systems. Communication media: cable, radio, optical fibre, satellite, and their advantages, mobile communication and networks.

IMS 202: CULTURE AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS  

This course examines cultural theory and analyzes cultural products and the cultural production process. It explores the principles and canons of cultural analysis and criticism; orality and literacy; reading culture versus SISOMO culture; Africa and the political economy of cultural production and consumption in the global village; the celebrity phenomenon. Students will investigate popular culture and use various concepts and approaches to investigate the phenomenon of the popular genres of television, and elements of popular culture in the media, applying the theories examined and discussed.

IMS 203: FUNDAMENTALS OF DATABASE SYSTEMS

Introduction: Database Systems vs. File Systems, terminology. Three levels of data abstraction, Database Languages, System Architecture of a Database System, Classification of DBMS. Data Modelling: Conceptual Model, Internal Model, External Model and Physical Model, Entity-Relationship (ER) Model, Entities and Entity types, Relationship and Relationship type, Constraints, Weak Entity Types, ER Diagrams. Semantic object model. Process of Database Design: Requirement Analysis, Conceptual Database Design, Database Schema Design. Database and Database Application Design: Database design using entity-relationship and semantic object models, database application design. Terminology in Relational Data Model, Keys, Integrity Constraints, Primitive Operations on Relations, Relational Algebra (RA), Relational Algebra Operations, Relational Completeness, Additional Operations on Relations form part of the course. Database Implementation: Foundations of relational implementation. Structured Query Language (SQL): DML Features in SQL, DDL in SQL, Updates in SQL, Views in SQL, Embedded SQL, Query-by-Example (QBE).

IMS 204: ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING

With an entrepreneurship course at the 100 Level as a basis, this course lays emphasis on how to identify opportunities, explore new media trends, and acquire an understanding of the key tools, skills and attitudes for managing innovation. Through project work students will receive training on how to cope with real problems and choices. In addition the course will use case studies to cover the practical aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship such as policies, decisions, structures, staffing, compensation, and rewards.

IMS 205: MEDIA PRODUCTION PROCESSES

Media Production Technology: Introduction to Production activities. It will expose students to learning the video Camera, Camera effects, Getting to know the lighting (instruments and characteristics). Using the time-code, working with audio (introduction), capturing and importing media: Learning the right technique of batch capturing using DV camera, using fire wire IEEE 1394/ i-link port. This also includes the right size and compression. Art of Editing: Introduction to Post- Production activities. Editing facilities and capabilities, offline and online editing. Anticipating editing; Post-Production for multiple camera shoots. Producing and Directing Short Film and Video: Script writing and storyboard. The course will also transform ideas into words, developing analytical skills in order to objectively evaluate video production. Video Production: Exploring and executing a video production such as music video or tv commercial. Exporting and Compression: Learning the right bit rate for exporting. Different media will have different bit rate and compression. High quality DV compression is suitable for broadcasting while low compression of video is suitable for web casting or CD ROM.

IMS 206: MULTIMEDIA SCRIPTING

The course is primarily aimed at introducing the students to writing scripts for multimedia. The use of different software packages in multimedia scripting will be comprehensively looked at. The technicalities and essentials in script writing will also form part of the course.

IMS 207: COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN IN MEDIA  

The course introduces students to the use of state of the Art software packages in media design. Students will also be introduced to design concepts and general principles, visual design software – print, web pages, video games and animation, motion graphics (Adobe PageMaker, CorelDraw, Ventura, Documenter, QuarkXPress etc). Visual design approaches: Wireframe, Mock-up and Prototype. User-centered design: UX design, UI designs – material design, bootstrap design and foundation design.

IMS 208: IMAGE PROCESSING & GRAPHICS APPLICATIONS

The course is aimed at introducing applications of digital image processing; provide an overview of image processing and computer vision system as well as different types of image presentation and storage. The course will as well teach the students with multimedia applications, image perception (light, luminance, brightness, and contrast, visibility function, monochrome vision models, colour coordinate systems and colour vision models). Other components of the course include image transformation; two-dimensional spatial transforms, intensive reforms, morphological transforms, image transform masks as well as morphing and warping. Image enhancement under which point operations, histogram modelling, spatial operations transforms operations, multi spectral image enhancement. Edge detection: Gradient operators, boundary representation, boundary extraction, region and shape representation: Run-length codes, Quad-trees, Geometric features, moment-based features, Fourier descriptors and Hough transforms. Image segmentation: amplitude thresh-holding and window slicing, component labelling, thresholding and clustering, boundary based approaches, template matching and texture segmentation. Image data compression: pixel coding, transform coding, wavelet coding, JPEG and MPEG systems. Applications of digital image processing in media will also form part of the course.

IMS 209: DIGITAL EDITING AND COMPUTER RETOUCHING

The students will be taught, in practical terms the use of graphics and editing packages which will enhance their skills in creating and manipulating images. The course will look at manipulating programs like gimp, ultimate paint, skecil, pixie, inkscape, paint.net, smoothdraw NX, imageforge, brush strokes, project dogwaffle, sodipodi, karbo 14, artweaver, gimpshopdotnet and imagemagick. Other areas the course will focus include animation and 3D programmes: terragen, google sketchaUp, art of illusion, blender, 3D canvas, graphix, 3D Plus, Daz 3D, Anim8or, synfig, BRL-CAD, MindsEye and maya personal learning editor. The course will as well consider miscellaneous graphic editing programs like picassa, IcoFX, Pixel toolbar, colorpic, favicon generator, faststone image viewer, Icon Studio 1.2

IMS 210: WEB- BASED TECHNOLOGIES & MULTIMEDIA

This course is designed to introduce students to web-based technologies, its principles of operation and application in media, the creation of Internet Multimedia and other related topics. Mobile Apps: native, hybrid and responsive websites. It will also touches on the Web application frameworks: Mobile application frameworks, Web content management, the role of information technology in various fields of new media. Programming paradigms: Backend, Business Logic, Front-end, etc. the course will also introduce students to multiple benefits of multimedia to both the organizations that implement these technologies and to the consumers. The course also has a practical component where students will be exposed to hands-on skills on multimedia content creation and be able to apply them in journalism practices.

CMS 301        INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION

This course is an overview of the world’s media systems. The focus will be on the flow of information between the industrialized and advancing nations; how ideology, culture, economy and international market structure have all contributed either in hindering or advancing the international flow of news and entertainment among nations. The scope, characteristics, peculiarities and current issues in international communication  will  be  exhaustively  treated  so  as  to  acquaint  the  student  with  a thorough knowledge of the politics and manipulative nature of international communication.

CMS 302        COMMUNICATION AND SOCIETY

Examination of the media of communication as social institutions with particular attention to pertinent sociological concepts, themes and problems; the role and relationship of the mass media vis-à-vis other major social institutions. Focus on the sociology and professionalism of media communicators, media  contents  and  the  issue  of cultural imperialism and media dependency; internal dynamics and control of media organizations and mass communication politics. The role of communication in development is critically examined.

CMS 303: GENDER & COMMUNICATION

Gender issues are critical to development. Accordingly, the course examines the ways in which gender relations are impacted by culture, conventions, policies, communication and media as well as other  dynamics in society.

IMS 301: INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MEDIA

This course introduces students to different social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube, etc. their operations, applications, management and impact on society. The course will also introduce students to the aspects of creating and maintaining such media platforms, information security and traffic generation techniques

IMS 302: DATA JOURNALISM I

This course aims at producing graduates skilled in secondary data handling, contextualization or interpretation of specific data. The course will also introduce students to state-of-the-art software used in data journalism. It will also equip the students with the skills in identifying possible sources of interesting data, including data bases of governments, international organizations and other data sources. Students will work on projects; from choosing the topic, collecting the data, carrying out analysis and writing the final news story.

IMS 303: e-PUBLISHING

This is a practical course with a conceptual component which studies the publishing process (from manuscript to pre-press to marketing), paying particular attention to the way digital technology has revolutionized publishing. Its features include: e-book editing and copy editing in the digital platform, online publishing of books, magazines, newspapers and other content. The course studies also editing symbols and proofing symbols; publishing in the creative economy; academic publishing and trade publishing, and the use of computer graphics design tools such as CorelDraw and the Adobe Suite among others.

IMS 304: MEDIA ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT  

The media management course introduces students to the principles of managing a media organization, promotional events and media campaigns.   The students will also be taught management skills involving large corporations as well SMEs, or community radio and television stations which are owned and run by journalists or the community.

 

IMS 305: MULTIMEDIA DATABASE SYSTEMS

Introduction to Multimedia Databases: Types of multimedia information, multimedia database applications, characteristic of Multimedia objects, components of a multimedia database management system. Multimedia Storage and Retrieval: Multimedia objects storage, file retrieval structures, disk scheduling, server admission. Multimedia Information Modeling: Metadata for multimedia, multimedia data access, object-oriented models, temporal models, models and multimedia authoring. Query Multimedia Databases: Query processing and query languages. MMDBMS Architecture: Distributed MMDBMS architecture, client-server components, implementation Considerations.

IMS 306: FUNDAMENTALS OF TELEVISION & DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY (2 UNITS: 30 LH)

The students are to be taught in an introductory format, television and other digital system display technologies and their applications. Relationships and distinctions between the two will also form part of the course.

IMS 307: DIGITAL AUDIO & VIDEO SYSTEM TECHNOLOGY

This course Introduces students to Digital Video and Audio, digitizing video and audio, Image production, storage and manipulation. Digital Nonlinear Editing: The promise of Digital Nonlinear Editing The increasing complexity of the editing process. The coming together of film and video editing will also be part of the course. The Editing Process, Film and Videotape Post-Production Procedures: Formats and Standards. Part of the course include film editing procedures, the development of videotape. Integrating and orchestrating equipment via time code.  Audio editing in the online room, digitizing and storing material, editing on a digital Nonlinear System: Digital Video and audio compression: techniques.

IMS 308: INTERACTIVE & MOTION GRAPHICS

This course is designed to cover two-way interaction and adding motion to graphics with appropriate rendering. Students will be trained on developing graphics for interactive games and advertisements using HTML5-based designs and motion graphics packages such as Google Web Designer, Adobe Animate Creative Cloud, Flash [Legacy] tools and interactive data visualization tools like VTK (python programming), D3js (JavaScript programming).

IMS 309: COMPUTER ANIMATION

This course will explore the 3 Dimensional Elements An introduction to modeling and animation, students are to be given an overview of 3D animation and its application and types. Understanding coordinate system, vertex, faces and object. Concept of wireframe, surface and solid modeling is also inclusive. Construction planes and differences between object space and world space as well as the principles of animation in practice, exposure to the principles of making characters alive also forms part of the course. Students are introduced to principles of animation. Polygonal and Nurbs Modeling Introduction of Polygonal Modeling techniques which includes: the Box, using Edit Mesh, Smoothing Techniques, Subdivision Surfaces.   Introduction of Nurbs-Modeling techniques which includes: Utilizing NURBS toolbox, surface points and CVs. Importing and attaching NURBS surfaces, rebuilding surfaces, curve and surface approximation. Introduction to Graphic Animation Introduction to the graphic animation process which includes: Camera & Animating Camera, Set & Background (Image Plane), Light Linking. Animation Techniques Introduction to the animation process. Demonstration and supervision on animation techniques, animation controllers, graphs and editor. This includes: Walk Cycle and Facial Expression using Blend Shape. Dynamics animation Introduction to dynamics animation. Demonstration and supervision on Rigid Bodies, Soft Bodies, Constraint, Particles. Tips and tricks on rendering. Camera and Rendering Characteristics of cameras. Placing camera in a scene and modifying camera parameters. Understanding camera navigation buttons. Concept of rendering in 3D modeling. Render options and file output.

IMS 310 LANGUAGES IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION

This  course aims at training students to acquire knowledge of a variety of media languages to enable them understand the ways in which information and messages can be conveyed and how their interpretation of information or ideas from media and other information providers can be related to the type of languages used. It also aims at teaching the students to understand how information, ideas and meaning are communicated through and by various media and other information providers, such as libraries, archives, museums and the Internet.

IMS 311:  SELF-MANAGEMENT & PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS 

This course provides practical strategies for improving self-management skills in order to develop one’s effectiveness. It will dwell on how to manage difficult situations, maintain a sense of purpose and direction under pressure and develop the confidence to manage a wide range of situations and people. Through this course, the students will learn to make the most of all the personal resources at their disposal.

IMS 312 ONLINE MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

The course takes the perspective of integrated online marketing communications, involving Public Relations and various forms of advertising and publicity: Public Relations and advertising practices, the roles, functions, purposes, responsibilities, and methods of the public relations and advertising professions of the corporation.

IMS 313: CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

This course provides an understanding of the process of providing new media product in industry. This should include creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and management. The course also introduces students to the concept of creativity and the development of creative mindset that deals with innovation as concept and innovation as a discipline in the context of organizations especially in media related businesses.

CMS 401        MEDIA LAW

Study of the legal framework within which mass media institutions operate in Nigeria; the development and constitutional growth of freedom of expression in Nigeria, the privileges and restraints  affecting  the  mass  media, such as  libel,  sedition,  privacy,  contempt,  obscenity, copyright, etc. and government regulation.

Ethical and moral standards applicable to the media and communication professionals; ethical responsibilities of individuals, groups, and organizations engaged in message construction, transmission or consumption, particularly in the field of news and public affairs, entertainment and persuasion.

CMS 403        DATA ANALYSIS IN COMMUNICATION RESEARCH

Students are introduced to data analysis techniques, particularly the use of tables, graphs and other statistical techniques and procedures. They are  taught  how  to  present  and  interpret  data,  using  these techniques.

CMS 404        SAFETY OF MEDIA PROFESSIONALS

In today’s environment of violent conflicts, international organized crime, and government impunity, the safety of journalists and media professionals has become of prime concern. This course analyses the issues and challenges involved in safeguarding the lives of journalists whose work put them in harm’s way. Institutional and other remedies are considered and debated.

CMS 405        MEDIA ECONOMICS AND SUSTAINABILITY

Critical issues have arisen over the last few decades on sustainability of the media in the face of a rapidly changing economy and importantly changing media technology. This course will examine principally emerging media occasioned by contemporary realities.

CMS 406        COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

This is an introductory study of the role of communication in the development process.  The role of the   media   in   relation   to   interpersonal   networks,   including   the   multi-media   approach   to communication in the development process is emphasized, along with the dynamics of development and communication variables that influence development.

CMS 499        ORIGINAL RESEARCH PROJECT I & II

Each student is required to select, in consultation with the supervisor, a topic/problem and study this in detail, apply necessary theories/concepts and appropriate methods. Students initiate and execute a project following the steps in the research process, or do a professional production in one of the following areas: journalism, advertising, public relations, radio/television broadcasting, film or multimedia. However, each candidate is advised to orient his/her research project in a relevant area of specialization in Communication and Media Studies. Original Research Project I focuses on at least the first three chapters of the final research project. In Original research project II, the final research project is expected to be submitted to the Department for assessment by Internal and External examiners. The project may also be defended before a panel of examiners.

IMS 401:  HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

This course will expose students to human psychology and its interplay with digital inventions. It will focus on the overview of computer-human interface, formal methods of interface design, man-to-machine, and machine to man techniques.

IMS 402: DATA JOURNALISM II

This course is a continuation of data journalism I. it aims at improving  the graduates skills of secondary data handling, contextualization or interpretation of specific data learned in level 300. At the end of this course, student will be able to find data to answer questions, test assertions and monitor those in power, find stories in data by detecting patterns and discovering relationships, evaluate the reliability of data sources and methods,  acquire data through public sources and by scraping websites and PDFs,  clean messy data so it can be categorized and analyzed accurately, analyze data to discern meaningful patterns from random noise and finally, publish data stories for both deadline and project stories.

IMS 403: INTERNET BROADCASTING

The course exposes students to utilization of the internet to disseminate contents to audience. The course will focus on live streaming of audio and video contents on the net. Attention will also be given to methods of generation and sustenance of followership and viewership of contents, and other modalities and peculiarities of broadcasting on the internet.

IMS 404: PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

At the completion of the course, students will understand the fundamentals of news and how to write different types of news stories for television and plan different types of content. They will also acquire the basic editorial skills needed to produce packaged stories. The course contents include: the basics of writing and interviewing for television news and current affairs programs; how to format television news programs and develop story ideas; learning the roles of director, producer; and the elements of pre-production planning.

IMS 405: DIGITAL RENDERING

Ray Tracing: Introduces the ray tracing rendering algorithm including the calculation of shadows, reflections, and refraction. Binary Space-Partitioning (BSP) Trees: An overview of binary tree structures for organizing geometric data to increase the efficiency of searching, manipulation, and rendering of large virtual environments.  Rendering technologies will also be studied.

IMS 406: 3D MODELING  

Three-dimensional Modeling and Representation: Representation and modeling of objects; polygonal representation vs. solid modeling methods. Viewing and Camera Control: Frames of reference, viewing systems, and 3D transformations. Illumination Models: Basics of illumination models including ambient, diffuse, and specular lights. Image Processing: Basics of representing, storing, displaying, and manipulating 2D images. Texture Mapping: How to map an image onto the surface of a 3D object, including texture subdivision, texture replication, and texture blending.

IMS 407: ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA

The course is analysis of the nature, types, and context of production of entertainment content. The course will explore economic and socio-cultural dimensions of entertainment and its effects on mass audience. It will focus on reality shows, game shows, talk shows, soap opera, music, and audio-visual content via media structure.

IMS 408: SPECIAL TOPIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA

This course deals with current trends in digital media.
