Chuwkuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University was established as Anambra State University of Science and Technology by law No. 13 of 2000 by the Anambra State Government.

The University which began with two campuses had her administrative headquarters situated at Uli in the previous site of the Ekwenugo Okeke Polytechnic, formally called Anambra state Polytechnic and the second campus at Igbariam in the previous site of the College of Agriculture.

Whereas the law setting up the University eliminated the State Polytechnic and the University acquired its benefits and liabilities, the University law neglected to nullify the Edict setting up the College of Agriculture, Igbariam, thus, legitimately, the University and the College existed one next to the other at the Igbariam Campus site, until 2006 when the legislature moved the College of Agriculture to Mgbakwu, around fifteen kilometers far from Igbariam.

By the Anambra State University Amendment Law No. ANHA/LAW/2006/01 of 26th January, 2006, the name of the University was changed to Anambra State University.

This was based on the Visitation Report of 2004 proposal that the University ought to return to a customary University.
