Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University began in 2001 as Anambra State University of Science and Technology according to the law which set it up – law No. 13 of 2000 by the Anambra State Government. The name was changed to Anambra State University in 2006 by the Anambra State University Amendment Law No. ANHA/LAW/2006/01 of 26th January (2006). This was with regards to the Visitation Report of 2004 proposal that the University ought to return to a customary University.

The name was then changed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu on 11 September 2014, after a bill was passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly with the aim of immortalizing Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
