COOU Mass Comm Lecturer’s Son Wins Southeast/Southsouth Spelling Bee Competition

A grade Four pupil of King of Kings Foundation School, Owerri, Imo State, Chiagoziem Nwabueze, has won the 2018 edition of Smart Edu Executives Speling Bee Competition held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The eight-year-old boy is the son of Dr. Nwabueze, C., a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU).

Chiagoziem emerged overall best at the grand finale of the keenly contested competition which featured finalists from schools in Rivers, Abia, Imo, Delta, Anambra among other states, each school represented by three students.

His victory gave his school the number one position at the event held last week Thursday, with a trophy and cash award as benefits.

For the past three years, Chiagoziem, the third child of Dr. Nwabueze, has won overall best position a number of times in his class and specific subjects across his entire set. He is also an author. He wrote his first book entitled “Friends That Make Family” last year, at the age of seven. The book is one of the approved texts officially used by students in lower classes in his school.

Chiagoziem is also gaining popularity among his school mates and pupils in other schools especially with his YouTube programme entitled “Children’s Shelf Review” where he presents a review of interesting children’s literature, among other activities.

A spelling bee competition is an event in which a panel asks contestants to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. It is one of the most popular events held across the world today, but put together by different organizations, especially those interested in academic development of children.
