A graduate of Mass Communication, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ujukwu University (COOU), is among 15 journalists to participate in a training project to build the capacity of Nigerian journalists in scrutinizing budgetary and procurement issues. Ebuka who works for Premium Times, a leading online news platform in Nigeria, was picked after a painstaking audition and selection process. The training programme is being organized by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), in collaboration with the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC).
The training which will span for three years is part of the $5million project supported by the MacArthur Foundation. It focuses on “Strengthening the Capacity of the Nigerian Media to Investigate and Report Procurement Process.”
The project is divided into two phases and would involve providing training for Abuja-based journalists. The programme which commenced on April 4, would build participants’ skills in investigative journalism, data journalism and infographics, procurement law, tracking and monitoring, among others.
The programme will also provide funds for the journalists to work with the ICIR and appointed mentors in order to undertake investigative reporting projects on critical sectors of the economy, with particular focus on procurement and contracting processes over a three-year period.
