The frequent loitering of cattle in Nigeria university campuses is beginning to get public attention. The authorities of the University of Uyo (UNIYO), recently gave a two-week ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to evacuate their cattle from the environment of the main campus of the university. The ultimatum which began on April 28, 2017 expires on May 11, 2017. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Enefiok Essien, gave the ultimatum at a meeting with the Fulani herdsmen.
The question is after the ultimatum what next? We are wandering why cattle have suddenly started enjoying grass in Universities? Does it have academic taste? We suggest that the best way to achieve peace between the herds men and University authorities is to ‘graduate’ the cattle that are seen on campuses. Any cattle seen in the university environment may actually need a degree otherwise why should they prefer university grass? Someone needs to do a research on this. Universities do not want problem with herdsmen. So herdsmen should respect the sanctity of the ivory tower and take the cattle elsewhere, except the cattle want a quick degree.
