Campus Radio Stations In Lagos State

Campus radio is an important educational and social facility for campuses around the world. It prepares students with real-life experience. Most of these stations feature news shows, sports programmes, and public affairs broadcasts, which prepare students for careers in journalism, television, and more. Campus radio station undoubtedly allows students to receive important media experience they may not be able to find anywhere else on campus. Whether it is through research, working with others, or preparing their own material, there is transferable experience in much of what a student disc jockey or student reporter does at his or her college radio station. A student could turn out to be a fantastic On-Air Personality (OAP) at while in the higher institution by doing well in the campus radio station.

In most higher institutions both students in Mass Communication and other departments participate in the running of campus radio stations. These stations air very interesting programmes enjoyed by listeners within and outside the university community. Here is a list of campus radio stations situated in Universities in Lagos State.

Unilag 103.1 FM, Lagos

UNILAG 103.1 FM is the trail blazer in the campus radio landscape in Nigeria. It is owned by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). It was the first campus radio station to receive license from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in 2003.

In fact, the history of Campus broadcasting in Nigeria began with the story of Unilag’s attempt to get a campus radio license in 1982. That move did not succeed until the eventual Media Deregulation Policy of 1992. The License was eventually granted in February 2002, twenty years after the University applied for one. The frequency of 103.1 FM was assigned to the University in July 2003 and the station was officially commissioned on the 14th of December, 2004 by former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Unilag Radio then became the first Campus station to receive a license and go on air in 2004. It was based on Unilag Radio’s credible performance, the stage was set for other campus stations to receive their licenses.

Today, Unilag radio is waxing even strong, becoming very popular in a very competitive media landscape in Lagos state and succeeding as well.
