Troops of Nigerian soldiers in Asikra / Uba Local Government Area of Borno State in North-East is current having a heavily crossfire with Insurgents loyal of Islamic State – West Africa Province [ISWAP].
The ISWAP fighters were spotted on Saturday morning along Ngude axis towards Askira, in a long convoy of about 16 gun trucks.
The residents have fled to the bush in fear because the troops are bathing them.
According to source, ‘immediately the fighters stormed Askira, they moved to the military base’.
Casualties could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.
However, the ISWAP is a military group and administrative division of Islamic division of Islamic State. [IS], it is a Jihadist militant group and unrecognized proto-state. They are basically active in Chad Basin and fights an extensive insurgency against the states of Nigeria, Cameron, Chad and Niger. It is an offshoot of Boko Haram with which it has a violent rivalry; Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau killed himself in a battle with ISWAP in 2021. ISWAP is the umbrella organization for all Islamic State factions in West Africa including the Islamic State in Greater Sahara [IS – GS] , although the actual ties between ISWAP and IS – GS are limited
