Breaking! ASUU Suspends Strike, Directs Members To Resume Work Friday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its three-month old nation-wide strike, directing its members to resume work tomorrow (Friday).

This came after the Union reached agreement with the Federal Government after a meeting held between the two groups on Thursday.

The information was contained on ASUU’s Twitter handle, @ASUUNGR on Thursday evening:

The NEC has decided that the STRIKE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED.

The strike was called off after a two hour meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige.

Ngige said after the meeting that eight areas of disagreements were discussed and agreed upon by the two parties, while expressing gratitude to ASUU leadership for their understanding, report’s PUNCH.

ASUU president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said lecturers are to resume on Friday, February 8, 2019.

The University lecturers commenced a nationwide strike late last year to demand for the full implementation of the agreement it reached with the government in 2009.

Until now, government and the leadership of the union have met nine different times, with non yielding any meaningful result.
