Written by Callistus Ukaegbu

Activities at the ever-busy Aroma junction, Awka were momentarily brought to a halt by member of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Nwaforizu College of Education, Nsugbe chapter following a protest which the students held against alleged increment in transport fair to their school.

The students who caused heavy traffic alleged that they were being intimidated by agents appointed by the Transport Ministry of the state government to part with higher transport fair.

They further called for the removal of the special adviser to the governor on special duties, Dr. Mrs. Uju Akudo and the State Commissioner for Transportation, the Honourable Chinwe for not intervening on the matter in favour of students.

Apart from calling for the removal of the State Commissioner for Transport and Special Adviser on Special Duties, the students made other demands which wee contained on the banner they paraded during the demonstration. They wrote: “Say No to intimidation & Molestation of Nigerian Students of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe by some touts who are agents of the Commissioner for Transport, and SSA to our working Governor on Special Duties; That all the buses plying the college MUST be branded with the college for easy identification as our students are at the receiving end; that all the buses plying the college route MUST load from the park built by the college in Nsugbe and stop at the college’s new park in Onitsha,” among other demands.

In a quick reaction, a source close to the state Ministry of Transportation said the Commissioner for Transportation had no hand in what the students were accusing her of doing. He advised the students to channel their grievances appropriately in order not to cause nuisance to innocent residents of the city.
