It was a hilarious but challenging moment for students of the Department of Mass Communication, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, formerly Anambra State University, as their lecturer relocated to a rural setting with them to monitor their practical exercise.
The 300 level students taking a course entitled Rural Community Newspaper were currently working on a new concept they call Rural News Tourism.
This requires them to relocate to various villages, spend a night or two there and experience interesting news and feature stories live in the villages. Rural News Tourism is a concept introduced by the students which refers to visiting and residing in villages to experience local news first hand with a view to present very rich report reflecting your adventure. The students are expected to come up with very interesting feature stories after the adventure. They are required to travel to villages other than theirs, except the team leader whose village is selected for the adventure.
The unnamed lecturer handling the course decided to relocate to Achalla in Awka North local government area of Anambra state with a team of students working on a project in the community. The students spent time in the village with their lecturer who also followed them to the village stream as they studied the Culture of the community and students life.
The lecturer stayed in a mud house with the students as part of instructions that the students should live within the community and mingle with residents in order to understand them.
It was not an easy experience for the team that worked with their lecturer though they came up with one of the best jobs in the entire exercise.
