After the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) was formed in December 1976, the inaugural conference of the young association was held at the School of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, Legon. The follow-up conference was held at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. It was then a biennial conference held across countries in Africa, unlike what obtains today where the association now basically exists in Nigeria, after the Nigeria chapter became the only vibrant chapter. The association is now known as ACCE, Nigeria, though still open to scholars in Africa and other parts of the world.
