10 Most Common Regrets People Have Later in Life

This piece by Dan Western could be the best article you have read in recent times. It could save you a lot of trouble or make you seize opportunities you would have missed. I suggest you read it quickly.

10 Most Common Regrets People Have Later in Life

This is a list of the most common regrets people have, according to UpVee. I’ve included a write up for each point, and transformed the short video into a detailed article.

Make sure you won’t have these regrets when you reach old age:

  1. Not Travelling When You Had the Chance

This is one of the most common regrets I hear people tell me. People have said to me in the past that they regret not travelling more, before they settled down into a 9-5 job and a relationship.

Now, if you’re an entrepreneur, you’ll probably believe that not travelling whilst you’re young in order to work hard and get yourself on the ladder is the way forward.

After all, Grant Cardone done, a self-made millionaire recently made this same statement. And that doing so has allowed him to travel comfortably today whenever he pleases.

But, there’s two types of travel. One of those being when you’re exploring as much as you can, you’re young, single, no prior commitments, and you’re in your peak physical state. That’s an experience you really can’t miss out on.

Plus… Nobody said you had to put self-development and education on hold whilst travelling.

  1. Staying in a Bad Relationship

This one almost had me…

Are you someone, or do you know someone who stays in a bad relationship, simply because they’re scared to be alone or that they’ll never find anyone else?

So many people stay with their partners simply out of fear…

Eventually, this will become a HUGE regret. When you’re relationship has made you miserable and it’s too late to take back all those years you spent with them.

  1. Caring too Much About What Other People Think

Fear of what other people would think kept me captive for far too long. I would be scared to do all the things I wanted to do, in case my friends, or the people around me thought it was stupid.

Truth is, it’s your life, and you have to be happy with it. You cannot let the opinions of others dictate how you are going to live your life.

As the quote goes;

“We spend money that we do not have, on things we do not need, to impress people who do not care.” – Will Smith

Stop worrying so much about what other people will think of you for the decisions you make.

  1. Being Afraid to Say “I Love You”

I probably only said those words to 3 people in my entire life.

Why are we so afraid to say ‘I love you’?

Because it might make us vulnerable? Because the other person might not feel the same way?

3 words could make somebody’s day, their week, their month, their year, even their life! So this is a lesson from the older generation to us all; don’t be so afraid to tell people you love them.

  1. Working too Much

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” – Dolly Parton

One of the biggest regrets people have is having worked too much their whole life, that they forgot to actually live. They were so busy trying to make money to have all the things they wanted, that they were unable to have fun.

Unable to enjoy themselves.

Unable to even use all the things they worked so hard for.

Don’t be one of these people. Try and find work-life balance, so that you can make money doing what you love, but also have the free time to use it.

It’s like they say, some people are making $40,000 a year, and happier than ever. Whereas others are making millions, but they’re miserable.

Your income doesn’t dictate your level of happiness.

  1. Not Playing With Your Kids Enough

Personally, I don’t have kids, but I can see why this would be a common regret people have when they get older.

Children grow so fast, and if you’re too busy working, or being lazy, you might just miss it. Those soccer games, school plays, days out… you only have a limited number of years to experience those things, and play with your child whilst their young.

Are you spending enough time with your children?

  1. Not Spending Enough Time With Your Parents

Similarly to not playing with your kids enough, not spending enough time with your parents is another common regret. It’s expected that you will outlive your parents, and it’s unreasonable to think that they’ll be around forever.

If you don’t spend enough time with them now, you’ll regret not doing so when they’re gone and it’s too late.

  1. Never Taking A Big Risk

“He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.” – Muhammad Ali

Quite frankly, if you live your whole life without ever taking a big risk; you my friend have lived a very boring life.

Risks don’t always pay off, but they’re involved with all of life’s best experiences. Those who aren’t open to taking risks, will never be able to see the most of what life has to offer.

Take some risks!

Quit your stable job. Book a one way ticket somewhere. Start that business. Fly across the world to give a new relationship a chance. Pursue your dreams. Do the unthinkable. Live in a foreign country. Take a chance on yourself.

  1. Not Quitting a Terrible Job

Isn’t this the reason why most people end up being miserable?

I don’t know why people stay in jobs they late for their whole life. People growing up are so focused on moving out, and buying all the things they want; they end up completely screwing themselves over.

Once they have what they thought they wanted, they’ll realize that it’s not where happiness is found. But by that point, they’re already making payments on all the material possessions they wanted, and it becomes harder to leave their job.

It starts with the career! Pick a career you love, and worry about the rest later.

  1. Not Realizing How Beautiful You Are

Last on the list of the most common regrets, is not realizing how beautiful you are. Far too many people are insecure when they have absolutely no reason to be.

And this holds people back…

From going after their dreams, from pursuing their dream partner.

We are all unique, and we’re all beautiful. Don’t let this become a regret of yours. Be confident in yourself, believe in your dreams. You only live once.
