Massmediang Award! See Complete List of Winners In The Short Film Festival

The massmediang awards for the performers who distinguished themselves at the just concluded Short Film Festival will be holding this week. Winners of various categories of awards have emerged.

Recall that 200 level students of Mass Communication in COOU had organized themselves into groups to try their hands on short film production as part of film review class. The event is over, the movies have been released and winners of various categories have emerged. This includes consolation prizes for actors who distinguished themselves at the event.

Meanwhile we are aware that in recent times, the gender-neutral term “actor” is now used to refer to both male and female performers, as opposed to the use of “actress” to refer to female performers. But we will use the terms “actors” and “actresses” interchangeably while referring to female performers.

We also need to note that massmediang and partners specifically created a competition for “Background Actors”. This was for those performers playing extra roles, that is, background extras or “waka pass” roles as they are called in local parlance. A background actor or extra is a performer in a film, television show, stage, musical, opera or ballet production, who appears in a nonspeaking or nonsinging (silent) capacity, usually in the background (for example, in an audience or busy street scene). The extra could also say one or two things in the movie.

During the short film festival, the extras never knew there was a special category for them. Some felt they were not given speech roles so they were not serious. Some other extras were actually serious but the most serious ones whose performances as extras brought out the quality of their movies were selected for awards.

Ask any film maker, he will tell you that background actors or extras are very crucial to success of movies. This is why a special category tagged “extras competition” was created to honour them. In fact, majority of those to be honoured at the massmediang awards are from the extras category.

The selection of winners for all categories was done by massmediang partners who were secretly monitoring performances of students on set while production was going on. Also the class list was used as the course lecturer insisted that only those who sat for the first three quizzes should be honoured at the event.

Here is the complete list of winners; the movies that distinguished them are in brackets.
