This is a trending international story. A female zoo keeper at Hamerton Zoo in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, has been killed by a tiger in an accident that was described by the zoo management as ‘Freaky’.
The woman was killed in a ‘serious incident’ on Monday May 29, in the morning hours, according to police and park officials, after a tiger ‘entered’ an enclosure with the female member of staff.
The zoo released a press statement where it gave no further details on how the worker died, while staff were said to be ‘too distressed’ to talk about the death.
Reports have it that a visitor to the zoo, Pete Davis, had narrated what had happened. He explained that the deceased had ran into an enclosure where the tiger was, to save another keeper whom she had heard shouting from the keep. Pete described how he heard a girl’s ‘blood-curdling scream’ from inside the tiger enclosure.
Victoria Northover Holmes, who was at the tiger enclosure when the drama unfolded, said staff were throwing meat at the tiger to get it away from a keeper. But the female keeper did not survive the attack.
The zoo was evacuated of visitors after the incident with police and ambulance personnel present on the scene throughout all day.
Hamerton Zoo is an animal park set in 25 acres of Cambridgeshire countryside housing various kinds of rare, endangered and unusual animals, among others.
